K'deren

K'deren

Drills had finished for the day and Menanth made a graceful landing in the Bowl. Hopping off, D'ren gave his dragon a pat and slipped of his helmet. }:Donneth's would like to speak with you. :{ D'ren was a bit surprised. **Okay.** He made his way over to the Wingsecond.
"You wanted to see me, Sir?"

"Yes I did," K'deren removed his helmet before continuing. "You too did well out there."

The young rider smiled. "Thank you, Sir."

"Praise where praise is due. Not many young riders can keep control when a sudden gust of wind threatens to disrupt drills like it did."

D'ren's smile grew wider. "Menanth and I always try to do our best, Sir." He could feel the bronze beaming with pride.

"That's all we ever expect of you, remember that and you'll go far."

"Thank you," D'ren repeated. His face grew a little more serious. "I hope I'm not to forward for saying this, but I wish J'darin would promote you to Wingleader. You already are in everything but name."

K'deren suppressed a sigh, He was sure it wouldn't be the last time someone would say that to him. T'moran had promoted him, but J'darin had said straight out that he wanted a bronzerider in place. And the man was definite on that. "Who knows what may happen," he settled for saying.

"Yes, you're right," D'ren agreed. It was always possible that the next time the Senior Queen rose, they would have a new Weyrleader. Maybe one that would recognize K'deren's abilities.

"Maybe one day you yourself, may be in this position."

D'ren tried to keep from blushing. "That's a good number of turns away, if at all, sir."

"I could see that happening one day soon, part of being a good Wingsecond."

"Well, if _you_ think so, sir, then I believe it." D'ren felt his pride swell and his bronze echoed it.

"And you should believe it too."

D'ren nodded. "I do now, sir." Someday, when he had more experience . . .
yes, he could see it.

"Always believe a compliment, especially when you know that there is a nugget of truth in there."

"You sound like one of my teachers at Harper Hall," the young bronzerider laughed. "He had a saying for everything."

"A wise man, no doubt."

"Yes, he was. He taught me quite a bit."

"Most of it good I hope?"

"Yes." D'ren smiled. "And some of it applies to dragonriding."

"I hope you keep the advice in mind at all times then, it seems to be standing you in good stead so far."

"I will. Thank you, sir."
