Location: Dragonsfall Weyr
Date: month 2, day 1 of Turn 4
"Hey, beautiful!" Y'nub said sweetly as he slid his arms around Teseada's waist coming up behind her. "I've missed you."
She stiffened, not knowing what to say or do. His voice gave no hint of what he'd done, or supposedly done at least. She owed it to herself and Karri to ask him for the truth.
"I, I missed you too."
He gave her a little nibble on her neck then turned her around, "I swear, if I had to spend another night away from you sweepriding..."
"Is that all you were doing?" she asked.
"Unfortunately yes, it's quite the bore duty, but even bronzeriders have to do it." Y'nub said with a shrug. "And since tomorrow we'll both be busy with Threadfall, I plan on spending the whole night with you to make up for lost time."
"Really, so there was no gambling to pass the boring time away, nobody making any bets?" She tried to keep it light, but her voice broke on the word bets.
Y'nub smoothed the hair away from her face and gave her a playful kiss on the nose. "Not unless Larweth was making deals on the side." he joked. "Now come on, have dinner with me?"
"Is that another 'bet'?" she asked pulling away from him. "To be seen with me?"
He thew his hands up and played like he was fending off a blow, but inside he was developing a serious pit in his stomach. This sounded too close for comfort. "Whoah, If you don't want to go to dinner we don't have to, love. We can eat in if you want. I just want to spend some time with you, I missed you."
"I don't know whether to believe you," she said sadly. Karri's words had finally hit home.
"Love, I don't know what you're talking about." he said as sincerely as possible while taking her hand. She obviously _thought_ she knew something, so he would have to play this carefully. And when he got his hands on that blathering fool D'enek...
"You were heard," she said softly.
You were heard? What did that mean? Now Y'nub was just confused.
"What? Come on, What did I hear?"
"It isn't what you heard, but what Karri heard. You and that brownrider friend of yours."
Sharding Karri! That girl was nothing but trouble for him! What could she have possibly heard? "Who? D'enek? I don't know what she _thinks_ she heard us talking about, but D'enek is a big talker. He exaggerates things sometimes."
"He exaggerated making a bet with you that you couldn't seduce me so that Onnyth would favor Larweth when she rises? Karri exaggerated hearing that from both of you?"
Y'nub's mind started working very fast... Call Karri a liar or admit to talking about it be sticking with the exaggerating part. If he admitted it then Karri would be around to remind Teseada and to keep nagging at her about it until she started believing it. If he called her a liar, they wouldn't be friends anymore and he'd be rid of the girl. "No, she didn't exaggerate hearing us talk about that. We _never_ talked about that. I don't know what she thought she heard, but I never made a bet about seducing you, and if she's telling you I did, then she's _lying_ to you."
"Karri wouldn't lie to me. I know she wouldn't." Then she thought for a moment. "I could have Onnyth ask Larweth and the brown what the truth is."
"Larweth has nothing but affection and devotion to Onnyth." Y'nub said hastily, "Why are you believing Karri over me? She's just jealous that we're in love and she's all alone!"
"In that case, you won't mind if I do ask Onnyth to speak to Larweth then, will you?"
The bronzerider faltered for a moment, what would Larweth say? What did he know? Did he even understand things like bets? She'd ask anyways so what was the difference? "No, I don't mind if you ask, like I said I didn't do anything wrong! I am however starting to get a little upset by all your accusations!"
"I'll have her ask Karri's green what she said her rider heard as well.
If you're right, then Elliath will confirm it."
Something one of the other bronzeriders told him once when he was a weyrling brushed on his memory... Queenriders are fickle and always want what they don't have. You have to make them _want_ you. Y'nub knew he wasn't going to win by defending himself against the accusations so he took the chance. "You go ahead and talk to whoever you sharding want to! If you're willing to get into a tizzy over some gossipy lies one of your jealous friends is telling you, then maybe I don't mean what I thought I meant to you and maybe we need some time apart!"
"You go see that greenrider friend of yours. I'm not so sure I trust you any more." It hurt Teseada to say that, but when it came down to it, she'd known Karri a lot longer than Y'nub, and if it came down to it, she wasn't going to let one of her best friends down by accusing them of being a liar.
"What?!" That obviously hadn't worked the way he had wanted it to...
Y'nub realized that he was losing her, and a pissed off queen rider did not a happy queen dragon make. He tried again, still hoping he could convince her to believe him over that greenrider. "How can you believe her over me? Haven't i always treated you right? Haven't I always been a considerate lover? What does she have over you?"
"But you haven't," she said shaking her head. "That night when you ignored me, I should have listened to Karri then."
She's bringing _that_ up again! He thought for sure he had made that sound convincing enough... "For Faranth's sake! How many times are you going to bring that up!"
"Until I know what's true and what isn't!"
"I already _told_ you what happened!" he exclaimed throwing his arms in the air. He wasn't going to give up, he had too much on the line, but he knew he was losing this battle fast. "You believed me then, why won't you belive me know? Love, don't let your doubt ruin us. We can work this out if you just calm down for a few minutes."
"I," he voice wavered, it was so tempting just to believe him. But Karri... Karri had been so insistent, so there had to be something in it, and she had to work it out for herself. "Go away," she said softly.
"Leave me alone, I need to think."
Y'nub frowned, if he left without working things out he knew Karri would probably be waiting in the wings to talk bad about him some more.
"You need to think about _us_. About what we mean to each other. You don't want me to go." He closed the distance that had separated them.
If he could just hold her, touch her, caress her in all the places that she liked, she would forget all about that dratted Karri.
"You heard what I said." She looked him full in the eyes. "Go, now."
The bronzerider stopped his advance and dropped his hand to his side where he balled his hands into a fist. Fine... if she wanted to be like this then what did he care anyway. He was better than she deserved, and if she didn't see that she should be glad to have him then he didn't need her. Larweth was the best bronze out there, and he could fly any queen he wanted, Y'nub didn't need to pad the flight by bedding the rider anyway. "Fine. You want me to go, I'll go. But you'll come crawling back to me begging for forgiveness. You just watch."
It was hard, but she stood her ground, watching him turn and go.
