Z'al was excited about his gift to his friend. He made his way to the bronze rider's weyr. He knocked and waited. He hoped the boy was happy with it.
C'lor opened the door and grinned when he saw his friend. "Hi Z'al!" he said.
"Well, I was hoping you'd be here. I found something I just couldn't pass up and I thought you'd like to see it." He said with a mischievous grin.
"Come on in! What did you find?" he asked curiously.
"Well, it's something I have that you had an interest in." Z'al smiled mischievously.
"What would that be? I can't think of anything that you have that I don't other than Dis." he paused for a moment in thought. "You found a flit egg?" he asked trying not to sound hopeful.
"I just might have." He smiled as he handed his friend the basket he had arranged for him. "I hope the small critter gives you as much pleasure as Dis has me."
C'lor took the basket carefully as if it contained his most treasured possession. "What do I need to do to care for the egg?" he asked setting the basket on his small table.
"First off you have to keep the sand really warm. You know, like the hatching sands sorta. Make sure you check on it and be ready to feed the little one once he or she hatches. Send loving words to the little one as you do and he's yours."
"How much longer until it hatches?" he asked growing excited at the thought of having a firelizard of his own.
"According to the person I got it from any time now. I've been keeping it for you. So that I might see it hatch for you. That's why I brought the meat and all with me." As if in reply to the thoughts of meat the small egg began to rock a bit. "Well, perhaps today will be that day."
"Oh!" the bronzerider said excitedly as he watched the egg move more violently and cracks appear along the edges. It wasn't long before a brown wing broke free followed shortly by the rest of the hatchling.
Carefully C'lor picked up the little one and accepted the meat that Z'al handed him. The brown hatchling quickly devoured the pieces and hungrily asked for more with an expectant chirp.
Once the little one was full and sleeping soundly on the bed, C'lor said, "Thank you, Z'al! What shall I name him? I've never had anything to name before, as Hayreith knew his name already."
"Well, it took me awhile to name Dis. I guess you can say he acted his name. What do you feel his name should be? If noting comes to mind, wait a bit and look at his personality. He should start to develop one as he settles down. He just like a baby now." He smiled as he watched his own flit stand guard over the much smaller flit. "The right name will just hit ya."
"Ah. I suppose a name can wait. He is a handsome little guy isn't he?
Thank you, again, Z'al." the bronzerider said with a smile. He was happy to have a new friend and knew that Hayreith would like the little one when he got used to the idea.
"Not a problem. You've become like a brother to me. I figured if it is family tradition and you are like a brother then you deserve one. Now remember the first few sevendays are key. He will need a lot of love and reassurance. Then after a few sevendays you can begin his training. He will need to be taught what he can and can not do. You can come to me for help in this at any time." He smiled.
"You can count on that." the bronzerider replied with a chuckle.
"Now that the tiny glutton has been fed, my stomach seems to say it's hungry. Care to join me for a bite to eat?" He smiled as he motioned toward the door.
"Sure. Will he be all right by himself?"
"I'll have Dis stay with him. He'll know where to find us. He'll just follow his stomach." He smiled as he directed the flit.
"All right." C'lor said still feeling kind of apprehensive about leaving the little brown. It was much like the feeling he had the first time he left Hayreith sleeping in the barracks.
