Let's Not Be One of Those

Writers: Dana, Emma
Date Posted: 11th March 2007

Characters: R'alt, V'con
Description: The two weyrlings talk about their dragons and their upcoming Blooding.
Location: Dolphin Cove Weyr
Date: month 2, day 15 of Turn 4

"How's things?" The bluerider gave the brownrider a grin as he flung himself into a seat across from him in the dining cavern. "Not seen you around in a while."

"Oh, things've been fine. Busy," R'alt grinned, putting his glass down. "How about you?"

"Very busy, if you know what I mean. These senior knots help tremendously."

"Shards they do, don't they? I take it you're having no trouble getting on then?"

"None at all, the girls and boys round here all love a dragonrider," V'con flashed R'alt a grin. "I guess you'll have noticed the same?"

"Noticed and then some," the brown weyrling replied with a chuckle. "I have yet to win a flight." Then he waved his hand. "I know that Tieranith is young yet, and the older dragons usually win, but shards. The not winning is so sharding frustrating."

"But there are ways to deal with it, and usually willing partners."

"You think I don't know that?" R'alt laughed. "No, it's more Tieranith's hurt pride that makes it frustrating. I get satisfaction, but he doesn't.
I guess sometimes it's as rough for dragons to grow up as it is for us."

"One day soon you'll both be satisfied." V'con grinned.

"I don't doubt it!" R'alt took a swig of his drink. "And how's Cacholetyth doing?"

"Tells me he's ready for action, and that I'm to make of it what I will."
V'con grinned, after all, action could have more than one meaning.

R'alt quirked a brow at him. "Action, huh? Hot for the greens, is he?"

"Seems that way."

"Well good for him," he chuckled.

"Good for me too," joked V'con. "One way to get to know some of those hot greenriders better."

Grinning, R'alt downed the rest of his drink. "Uh-huh." Then, as a comfortable silence stretched between them, his expression sobered a little. "Our Blooding is coming up."

"I know," V'con fell silent for a moment. "Does it scare you?"

"I'd be a liar if I said no." Then he shrugged a shoulder, trying to brush aside his unease. "Tieranith says I shouldn't doubt myself, or him.
But it's hard, you know?" R'alt had heard enough horror stories about Thread and what it did to dragonriders. Shards, he'd _seen_ those horror stories. And now he would be a part of one.

"Sounds like he's been talking to Cacholetyth," V'con tried to be casual with that remark, but he was sure his voice had given him away. "Mama says we'll be okay, but it's hard you know, they tell the stories of those who don't come back."

The brown weyrling scowled down at the table. Oh he knew. But he wouldn't let Thread get him. He wouldn't! He Impressed so that he and Tieranith could defeat _it_--not so that it could defeat them! And he'd be damned if he let himself give into fear. He wouldn't let it turn him spineless.

When he finally looked back up at V'con, there was an angry light in his eyes. "Let's just not be one of those, alright?"

"I intend to be here for many turns to come."

"So do I."
