"Are you taking a break about now, Nandia?" Ylisahn called as the assistant headwoman passed the doorway of the office.
"Hmm, yes." she replied as she poked her head in the door. "I promised G'len I'd meet him for lunch, and I noticed that the weyrlings had broken up."
"Oh. I was going to suggest we could have a klah together but you go and see him. We'll get together this afternoon."
"Why don't you come and join us? You can break up all his boring talk about wing formations and such." Nandia said with a tease. She loved her brother dearly, but he had a habit of going on about things she knew nothing about.
"All right. I'll be along in a moment. Where about are you sitting?"
"In the main area," she replied, "probably by the hearth. We always seem to gravitate to that area."
"Ridiculous in this climate," Ylisahn commented with a smile, "but it's about atmosphere. I won't be long."
Nandia came into the room fully and leaned against the back wall. "I can wait for you. G'len will have no problem finding company in the mean time." She didn't mind waiting, it was nice to walk with a friend.
"G'len's never seemed to lack for company," Ylisahn agreed. The greenrider was cheerful and happy and always ready to laugh at himself
- characteristics that made him a good meal companion.
"Yeah, it's too bad he seems to find all the really cute company." she mused as she peered at Ylisahn's desk.
"You find your share, don't you?" Ylisahn followed the other woman's gaze and decided to just ask. "Do you mind? About this? Me getting the job?"
Nandia raised her eyebrow and chuckled. "Mind? No, not a bit. Would I have taken the job, yes. But it's a large load off my shoulders to have you do it instead. You're much better suited anyway."
"Suited?" Ylisahn was a bit surprised that anybody could think she was suited to the job of Headwoman. She had thought it was more about a lack of choices for the Weyrwoman. "Do you think so? Not too ...
friendly?"
She grinned and bobbed her head. "I didn't say perfect, but a way better choice than I. And you're not too friendly, I've seen your temper enough to know better than that." Nandia added with a wink.
"Easy come, easy go," Ylisahn said with a laugh, knowing her faults all too well. Her family had always used the phrase to acknowledge her quick temper and her quick recovery. "I'm trying to control that.
Inappropriate in a Headwoman, surely?"
"I don't think so. It keeps the candidates and drudges in line." she shrugged, "The rest of us know not to take it personally on the rare occasions it happens."
Ylisahn caught at her braid and waved the end around in front of her.
"When I was young and it was more reddish ... people at least had some warning." She sighed. "I never imagined being Headwoman, you know.
Being assistant - that was something I _did_ want. But I'm enjoying it," she added honestly. She made a face. "I think I enjoy being in charge!"
Nandia chuckled, "And who said there was anything wrong with that?"
"Well, I do, I suppose. Ought I not to feel humbled and awed by the responsibility?" Ylisahn asked, her tone amused. "Not so much like a youngster with a pile of bubbly pies?"
She shrugged, not usually impressed by rank or power of any kind growing up in a trade caravan. "Or you could feel that they chose someone very deserving who will do a good job. Now how about that lunch? If we wait too long, G'len might just find himself a distraction and leave the cavern!"
"Oh, we couldn't have that! A good looking man getting away from us?" Ylisahn got to her feet and crossed the office. "Never mind that he's your brother and I'm not interested - even if he was. It's the principle of the thing."
"Definitely the principle of the thing." Nandia joked as she walked out the door with her friend.
