}:You don't _have_ to sit on your own, you know:{ Cenith spoke quietly, sensing how on edge Treya was.
**I know that, I just...** she sighed heavily, disheartened with the way things had been for her lately, ** I'm fed up with being the one to chase -
if he wants to come and sit with me, he can, but I'm not making the first move. Remember the last time I did that? I don't want to become the newest subject the old aunties gossip about - again.** With her back to the rest of the dining cavern, Treya continued drinking her klah, hoping against hope that he _would_ appear, that he _would_ acknowledge her and not run in the opposite direction.
"What's a lovely young lady like you doing sitting all alone?" K'mai asked as he slid into the seat across from her.
"Avoiding men." the words were out of her mouth before she had time to think. The words she had spoken suddnely hit her, and she looked up across the table mortified, "Oh K'mai, I am _so_ sorry. I didn't mean... oh Shards, I've done it again.." she was totally flummoxed. To make matters worse, when she lifted her head, she saw _him_ across on the other side of the dining cavern.
K'mai noticed the glance and arched an eyebrow. "Men in general, or one in particular?"
"To tell you the truth K'mai, right now, I'm not really sure." Treya's eyes met his, did he really want to know the truth, did any of them. "Tell me K'mai, first impressions; am I really just the type to roll in the bed furs for a night and then steer clear of forever - or until the next mating flight?"
Her words stunned her, she couldn't believe they had left her mouth but more so the tone of her question scared her. Her voice, what had happened? It was so harsh, so unlike her. She could feel heat rising behind her eyes, she looked to the cavern roof, but nothing would stop the tears welling...
"No." K'mai frowned slightly in concern. "If someone is avoiding you, I'm sure they have a good reason. Or they're a jerk." Although Treya could be a little clingy.
"I'm sorry K'mai, I really didn't mean to take it out on you." she shook her head, her smile tremulous. "It's just that - I, I want something more permanent; more permanent than most want to offer."
The bluerider stuck his elbows on the table and rested his chin in his hands. "At least you know not to look in this direction."
"I know, but..." she sighed heavily, but a twinkle of mischief appeared in the corner of her eye, "... what a waste." She gave a small laugh, "Why is it, that the men who I'm attracted to are all either taken; prefer men, or both? I just can't seem to find one for myself."
"Oh, I'm sure you'll find someone. After all, there are so many choices."
K'mai took a bite of his food.
"So many," Treya grimaced, "maybe, but as I said, _taken_ in one way or another. It may have been easier had Thread not returned, but _many_ don't want involvement because of Thread, because of the uncertainty."
Treya glanced around the cavern, "I'm mean look at them," she swung her arm wide, "most of the available men aren't sitting with available women, are they? They're sitting together, during mealtimes, after meals, while playing poker, or just sitting talking." her frustration was showing, she knew, but she couldn't stop the diatribe now, even if she tried. "Even the women, they sit there watching the men..." she gave a heavy exaggerated sigh, "wishing the men would watch them..." she finished on a giggle, ".. like me."
K'mai sipped his juice. "You're making this sound so hard. Just find someone for the evening and see where things go. You never know when you'll find someone special." He tipped his glass toward her. "Even _I_ was lovestruck enough to be weyrmated once."
"I have found someone, many someone's for many evening's. Do I have a sign written brightly across my forehead?" Another rider walked by, and her face brightened, a smile flashed wide across her face and her eyes sparkled up at him.
Mr'til stopped and chucked her under the chin, "Hello beautiful." he said, "Where have you been hiding lately?" He glanced across at K'mai and nodded a greeting. "If you have some free time at all, Treya, have Cenith let Eveath know." he asked, his gaze returning to hers, before he gave a wink and turned away.
"See?" she asked, when Mr'til was no longer within hearing, "One or two nights, and then - nothing..." She began, but then stopped and considered, "...mmmm... those one or two nights." she gave a throaty chuckle, "I guess I shouldn't be too impatient after all."
"See? Life is good! No need for brooding." K'mai smiled and took another bite. He wouldn't mind a night or two with Mr'til . . .
"He's quite....ummm... a man. Isn't he?" Treya's eyes flashed and her pulse quickened at the thought of being with Mr'til again. "Maybe I should....
Maybe I'll just have Cenith, you know - arrange something?" her left eyebrow lifted a little, and her grin widened.
"Ooooh, can I come too?" K'mai winked.
"Cheeky beggar!" Treya laughed, swatting at K'mai, then she looked closely at him, "Hang on! You..and he? Nah, surely... Have you?" both of her eyebrows raised questioningly.
He smiled slyly. "I do get around."
"One of these nights, we may have to compare notes." she laughed, "But for now, even if you're not a _permanent_ prospect...." she left the question hanging in the air between them.
"I can provide at _least_ one or two nights of fun." K'mai's smile widened as he leaned on the table.
"And I'll promise to make no attachment demands ...later." she almost purred across the table at him.
