Description: Nandia and Ylisahn spend a moment comparing notes on storm
preparations.
Location: Dolphin Cove Weyr
Date: month 3, day 19 of Turn 4
Notes: Ylisahn's Storm 03 - Storm arrives
Ylisahn had written lists and she was attempting to get through as many
things on the lists as she could. It kept her busy, but now the storm
had really arrived she wasn't stirring far from the dining cavern and
kitchens. It wasn't so much that they were critical, it was more that
people would expect to find her there. If people needed to speak with
her, then there was no point making them run all over the Weyr to find
her.
Instead she was making more and more use of her assistants.
Like Nandia.
Like Nandia who was crossing the dining cavern. It was an opportunity
to check that everything was going well with the precautionary
relocation of young children and their carers to the upper levels of
the Weyr.
"Nandia!" Ylisahn called above the noise of the storm.
"There you are." Nandia said with a relieved grin as she wiped the
sweat off her brow. All the activity of the last few candlemarks had
left her out of breath.
"You look like I feel. How is it going getting the mothers and
children upstairs? Are you finding spaces for them all?" It was an
imposition and likely would be the cause of many complaints if the
storm wasn't as bad as the dolphins' warnings suggested, but the
thought of having women and their children trapped in flooding was too
awful to chance.
Nandia sat down in one of the open chairs to rest her feet. "Yes, most
of them are moved, and the ones that are dawdling know where to go and
are getting assistance. I think some of the dragons are excited to
have little visitors to keep them company while stuck in their weyrs."
"Well as long as they don't let the little ones get blown _out_ of
those weyrs. Have you _been_ out there? I hate to think how bad it's
going to get if its like this already." Ylisahn thought about sitting
down but was afraid she wouldn't get up. Surely it would be easier to
just keep going?
The assistant headwoman snorted, "Just for a moment! That needle rain
was enough to make me take the long way around through the corridors
instead of cutting across the bowl. I'm glad J'darin grounded the
dragons, it's horrible right now."
"Are dolphins always right, do you know?" As neighbours the Dolphin
Hall were fairly new and Ylisahn didn't know much about the creatures,
other than that they helped people at sea.
Nandia shrugged, "I guess. I don't really know. But surely the
Weyrleader wouldn't put us through all this if he didn't take them
seriously."
Ylisahn nodded though it wasn't as easy as it had been to have complete
faith in the unquestioned wisdom of the Weyrleader since the former
Weyrleader's disastrous misjudgement had cost so many lives. "I
suppose it's better to be safe than sorry in this sort of situation,"
she said thoughtfully.
The assistant headwoman nodded and stood up again, realizing she
couldn't spare but a minute to rest. "What's next on the list?"
"Food, I think. The dry stores? Just in case." Ylisahn sighed.
"I've set aside a couple of rooms on the upper level, if you could
loiter around up there and make sure everything gets stored correctly.
No point in moving it only to lose it up there."
"Sounds good." Nandia said with a nod. "And boy am I glad you're
organizing all this, this is a nightmare!"
"It's certainly not how I wanted to end my first month as Headwoman,"
Ylisahn agreed. "Let's hope there's nothing too much worse to remember
it by."
"Let's hope." Nandia echoed as the left for the stores.
