He didn't want to move he would have preferred to stay curled up in his
dragons forelegs, but Th'gar couldn't; not when someone could be about
to meet their death outside. *Show me.* he asked Valieth, *where
outside is he?*

He could barely discern from the image he received, a lump protruding
from the rock, if it had been a darker colour, the lump would have
blended in, but the reddish sodden clothes were a giveaway. He had been
wandering around the cavern while receiving the image, grabbing whatever
he could to hand, riding straps, practice straps - anything that he
could possibly use. He picked up his goggles, then threw them down
again - they would be useless against the rain.

*You'll hold tight, don't let go whatever happens - * his train of
thought evaporated as a flit appeared overhead. Valieth raised himself
off the couch, as the flit hovered above Th'gar.

}:He wants you to help - Iaaeth's rider is out there now - watching:{
Valieth's eyes whirled orange, the reflection bathing the cavern in a
warm glow.

Th'gar tightened the straps around his waist - the other end he tied
around the storage hooks high up on the cavern wall. He hoped they were
strong enough to bear his weight, but Valieth's bulk should be enough to
hold him if the hooks gave way. He stretched the straps across the
dragon couch, asking Valieth to lay down again, and made his way out to
the weyrledge.

Ylisahn had thought of something else to do - and done it. She had
watched the young woman she had given the message splash across the
dining cavern, for a moment distracted by just how much water had got in
despite the sandbagging across the wide entrance to the cavern. But as
the messenger reached the stairs and climbed out of sight she looked
back out into the storm.

Was he still there? Something white was, anyway. If the firelizard's
message failed then perhaps the hers wouldn't, for she hold told the
young woman to try every weyr along the likely corridor until she found
the right one. Soon any number of people would be looking out, seeing
what they could do, and it would only be her that could do nothing.

Greah dispensed with knocking after the first couple of doors. Most
were open anyway and the riders quarters filled with people displaced
from the lower caverns.

"Hello, Where's the dragonrider?" she asked, as she had at each stop.
This wasn't the first where the rider was out in the wind-blown weyr
with their dragon, but this time when she was directed through things
were different. The dragon wasn't hunkered down, curled up against the
wind. The blue was busy with something - something that included straps
going off the edge of the ledge.

"Firelizard must have made sense," she muttered, turning on her heel and
stepping back through into the rider quarters. "We need help in here,"
she called over the hum of conversation. "The bluerider's rescuing
somebody off the cliffs."

}:I felt a tug on the straps, are you alright?:{ Concern shadowed each
word, Valieth was tempted to move, but knew that his rider's safety
relied on his staying still.

**I'm okay, its just the rain is making the straps slippery. I only
cleaned and oiled them yesterday, now I wish I hadn't.** Out off the
ledge, Th'gar was trying to be careful but the wind and rain weren't
making his job any easier. He was being blown every which way on his
descent, the rain making it almost impossible to keep the stranded
wretch below in sight. He had tried calling out to the man, but the
wind snatched away Th'gar's words the minute he yelled.

**Is there anyone up there who can help?** in his haste he hadn't asked
for help from those waiting out the storm in his quarters. **Is
Iaaeth's rider available?**

}:He is watching you from his ledge, Iaaeth said he could be more use to
you there, directing you?:{ Valieth didn't sound so sure.

**Ask Iaaeth to ask B'har how much further, I don't want to look down
again, I lose my direction when I do.**

}:He says to make way to your left and drop down another dragonlength
and you will be right beside the man. Once you are there, B'har will
come to help you bring him back up:{ Th'gar could sense relief flowing
through from his dragon, but didn't have to wait long to find out why,
}: There are more people on your ledge now, willing to help. They want
to know what can they do?:{

**Straps, I need more straps and furs, lots of furs, he will need it
when I bring him up. /Between/ never chilled me like this before.**

Malen could see his fingers slipping from their hold. He couldn't feel
them, but his eyes widened in horror as he could see his fingertips
appearing, slipping outside the crevice they had been clinging to. He
pressed his body closer to the rock wall, ignoring the searing pain that
shot up his arm. Excruciating pain, he could feel himself beginning to
lose his grip on consciousness as the pain became unbearable.

The dragon knew something, Greah could just tell. "Get another
dragonrider in here," she shouted back at the crowd. The dragon could
talk to her if he wanted, supposedly, but she'd never experienced it and
wasn't about to rely on it.

"All right. We'll need to keep them warm when they come up," she
muttered, talking more to herself than the others in the weyr. "We'll
need to pull them up."

"Furs here," a man said, pulling sleeping furs forward from the back of
the weyr.

"Other bedding in here," somebody called from the door of the rider's
quarters. "And I sent my boy to find a healer."

"And a dragonrider?"

"Somebody else went for one of those."

Greah nodded, picking up a glowbasket that had got knocked over by the
milling crowd and catching sight of something hanging on the wall.

Old straps. High above easy reach. Stored away because the scraps of
hide could be reused on some craft project or other and stored out of
easy reach so they would never be muddled with the current set.

"Here, give me a leg up so I can get those down," she said, pushing the
basket into one woman's arms and pulling the other man over to the wall.

With a second set of straps perhaps somebody else could get down and help.
