The Headwoman wiped her face again; and again it didn't help much. Was
there somebody else there now? Not white, darker. Above the man on the
cliff?

Don't reappeared in the cavern behind her, and the feelings from the
firelizard were pleased. She had done what she had been told to.
Ylisahn turned around and tried to convey her approval - and the idea
that the green should find somewhere safer to wait out the storm.

As soon as the firelizard disappeared she looked back out into the wind.
What if the rescue went wrong? What if two people ended up injured or
dead. She frowned and tried to keep her thoughts from conjuring up
worse scenarios as she peered at the cliff again.

Th'gar took one more look down, assured he was in the right place by
Valieth's commentary from Iaaeth. **I can see him!** Th'gar's foot
slipped as he lost concentration for a moment. His amazement at
actually being close enough to reach the man, made him lose his grip on
both concentration and the straps. He could feel his hands slipping on
the soaking leather, and his foot missed the crevice he had been
searching for.

For a moment he thought he would end up falling into the waters below,
he could see them churning now, a few body lengths below. Froth was
swirling and splashing below him, the detritus of the Weyrbowl floor
consumed by the flood.

}:B'har is coming to our weyr:{ Valieth's assurance was comforting.
}:He will have more straps for you to tie around the wounded one:{

**Wounded?**

}:I can sense his pain:{

Th'gar scrambled down further, working faster now he knew the man was
injured. He was surprised the man had been able to hold on for so long,
his injury must be minor for him not to have lost his grip in this wind.

Greah had a harness fashioned from from the old straps when the person
next to her stepped away. "Hey! I'm going to need you." But when she
looked up it wasn't the lower caverns man standing there - it was
exactly what she wanted. Another dragonrider. "Down there -"

B'har took the straps from the woman, with a grateful nodded, he made
his way down the ramp to the weyrledge. There were a few standing,
clinging to the sides of the cavern entrance, but they weren't doing
much to help. "Where is he?" he yelled to them.

Almost as one they shook their shoulders.

}:He is with the stranded one:{ Iaaeth informed him. }:He needs help,
he needs straps:{ The dragons relayed the messages between them.

Th'gar dropped to the ledge beside the stranger, he took in immediately
the man's perilous state, and with great care not to knock him from the
ledge, removed the straps from his own waist and thread them around the
stranger's. "You will be pulled up the rock face, all you need to do is
push yourself away from it, so you don't get more damaged. You'll sway
in the wind, but they'll get you back up there." His instructions were
yelled, but he felt sure the man understood.

Malen almost fell off the ledge in shock when the dragonrider appeared
beside him. Relief began to wash over him, he could feel his legs going
weak with relief, but his cramped fingers were already too loose on the
rocks. He willed his legs to keep holding him upright for a little
while longer.

"What can we do to help?" Greah asked, shouting above the wind as she
held onto a hand that one of the men extended.

"Not much any of us can do." B'har yelled back over the roar of the wind
as it whipped through the entrance. "I can't go down, too many chances
for mishap. I need to weight this strap down with something though,
that I can swing it across to Th'gar, otherwise he may not be able to
come back up." B'har wiped the rain from his face, this was some
serious weather they were having, he almost wished he was out flying
Thread, anything would be better than this murderous wind and rain.

"Weight ..." Greah went back into the rider's quarters and told one of
the women to remove the pillow covering. A sack. Rocks? None around.
Boots and shoes? Not heavy enough.

"Just the thing," she muttered, stuffing two large, full wineskins into
the pillow cover and returning to the weyr ledge. "Here!"

B'har grabbed the cover, managing to wrap the straps around securely
enough that it wouldn't fall apart the minute he dropped it off the
ledge. "I'll need a few of you to hold onto me, I have to get as close
the to edge as possible, and I _don't_ want to be ripped out by the
wind. Volunteers?"

Greah volunteered. She wasn't huge but she was tall and sturdy and not
easily blown away, even by stronger wind that any she could remember
before. She was one of those who caught hold of the dragonrider and
felt somebody catch hold of her in turn.

"We've got you!"

B'har was grateful for the services of one or two who stood forward to
help. Others just clung to the sides of the entrance, not wanting to
miss anything that was going on, but loathe to lend aid. He neared the
edge and tossed the weighted straps over the edge, hoping he was aiming
in the right direction.

Th'gar finished tying the straps around the stranger, **Get them to drag
him up - he needs to be made warm as soon as possible if he is to
survive the cold.**

}:They are dropping down more straps for you, B'har is above:{ The wind
buffeted them both, and suddenly the strangers body flew away from the
ledge, the only thing to save him - the straps he wore.

Malen was no longer aware of what was happening or where he was. No
sooner had the dragonrider secured him with the straps than his whole
system began to shut down. His hand, cramped into a claw could no
longer hold against the driving wind and rain. His injured arm had
dropped from between his body and the wall, and flailed in the wind. He
was no longer aware of being carried away by the wind, until in a brief
respite when he was dumped back, hard, against the rock; but even that
awareness was brief - he was unconscious within a moment or two.

Th'gar reached out and grasped at the strangers tunic, pulling him back
against the rock. **He needs to be taken - NOW.** His urgency was
carried by Valeith, as the dragon passed the message on. Within moments
Th'gar felt the unconscious man's body begin to ascend to the heights above.

~ ~ ~

}:He needs to be brought up _now_:{ Iaaeth relayed Th'gar's
instruction's to the letter. }:He is not sure the man will make it:{
the dragon was saddened that all their hard work could be for nothing.
}:Valieth says he can feel the weight on his straps:{

"Someone needs to start pulling on the other straps!" B'har yelled to
those standing around doing no more than watch the drama as it was
happening. "A man could die, damn you!" He yelled louder, they all
seemed to be stuck in limbo. "MOVE!"

One or two sprang forward and began tugging at the straps, more had
appeared from inside the weyr, all holding tight and dragging the sodden
leather into the entrance.

He noticed healer knots on shoulders and was grateful for foresight.
