DCW: Feeling Useless

Writers: Jane, Patrick
Date Posted: 26th May 2007

Characters: Ylisahn, Cherlyn
Description: Cherlyn asks Ylisahn if there's something a pregnant greenrider can do to help.
Location: Dolphin Cove Weyr
Date: month 3, day 19 of Turn 4
Notes: Ylisahn's Storm 10 - Storm intensifies, water deepens

"Cherlyn," Ylisahn said, stopping her hurrying when she caught sight of
the greenrider in the corridor. "Is everything all right?" Were they
near her weyr? Ylisahn couldn't remember off the top of her head and
then she was struck by a pang of worry for her papers and hides down in
her office. Had she moved the right ones? Were the rest all right on
their high shelves? "With the babies? And your dragon?"

"Everythings fine." Cherlyn reassured the Headwoman. "It's not like
Lueanth or my friends will let me do anything." She grinned "Of course
they're right, I can't risk harming the babies. But I just feel so
sharding useless."

"We're all camped out on the upper levels of the Weyr," Ylisahn pointed
out. "We're all feeling useless."

"But at least some of us could lift things and help people from the
lower levels. I just sit there and watch." Cherlyn was very
disappointed that her condition didn't allow her to do anything. She
felt like dead weight.

"Now you know how the rest of Pern feels when you go out and save us
from Thread," Ylisahn said gently. "Each to their own."

"I suppose..." Cherlyn's voice trailed off. "Is there any minor,
non-threatening task you can set me too?" She asked pleadingly.
"Sorting through soggy clothes? Anything? I need something to do with
my hands to keep my mind off the storm."

"All right." Ylisahn paused, trying to think of the best task to set the
greenrider, mindful that she was carrying twins. "You're quite right
about the clothes. Could you make sure anybody whose clothes got wet
from flood water - not rain - takes them off and finds something else to
wear? The wet clothes need to be put all together somewhere, and people
need to leave them alone." Ylisahn waggled a finger at the greenrider.
"Don't you handle them either. I have all manner of crafters warning me
about what could be in the floodwaters. For the moment we just need to
quarrantine the clothes and make sure anybody who was in the water has
cuts and grazes treated with redwort."

Cherlyn's light eyebrows flew up into her hairline. "Thats quite the
task you set a pregnant woman." She chuckled. "I'm not sure how many
will listen to a short fat woman, but I'll try."

"You're a dragonrider, Cherlyn, even if a pregnant one. You just tell
people what to do and they'll run around and do it." She smiled at the
greenrider. "Get the children to spread the word."

"Now that I can handle." Cherlyn said with a grin. "Children and I get
along very well."

"And a good thing, too," Ylisahn said, nodding at the other woman's
middle. "Be careful of yourself in all this, Cherlyn."

"With so many people watching my every move how could I not be?" She
asked with a smile. It was so good to be doing something.

"Thank you, Cherlyn. That's one thing I don't have to worry about."
