I'poro stretched slowly letting the late afternoon sun wash across his body. Foroth had finally begun to sleep in the evenings and with that I'poro finally had some free time in the evenings. He headed toward the beach, towel wrapped around one arm, a book on flight patterns in the other. His light tunic fluttered in the sea breeze as he settled the towel on the sand.
He removed his tunic and flopped down onto the open towel. Shading his eyes he looked out to see a few dragonets frolicking in the surf. One of them looked odly familiar... oh no.
Two small hands reached around to cover his eyes. "Guess who," a definitely female voice murmured, rather close to his ear.
Shards... "Honalyse." I'poro said in a false happy voice. I guess there was no time like the present. "What are you doing here?" He asked in false glee.
"Tibith wanted to frolick. I didn't feel like getting wet, so I thought I'd come bug you," she smiled. Pointing down at the book she asked, "Is now a bad time?"
I'poro shook his head and sat on the towel again. "No I was just going to sun for a bit." He said nonchalantly. He patted the ground next to him. "Have a seat sweetheart. I think its time we had a chat." He said seriously.
"Oh?" she asked, her smile fixed to her face but her look changed to one a bit more wary as she sat down beside him.
"Yeah." He kept the smile on his face, this was harder than he'd planned. He took her hands in his and looked at her. "Hon, we've known each other a while, and I think that you have to know something about me."
He looked at his bare feet and dug them deeper into the sand.
"All right," she said slowly, looking at him for any sign what this could be about.
Here goes nothing. "Honalyse before," he took a deep breath, telling B'lamick hadn't been this hard. "before I came to the weyr I thought there was somethign wrong with me. My friends and I would sit in the Hall and look at the pretty girls and they'd make plans on how to seduce them, what they wanted in a wife, who they thought would have them the most children. And I would usually just listen, and whenever they asked me what _I_ looked for, I'd blush and say: 'just someone who listens to me would be enough.' And they'd laugh and go on about their dream girls."
"The thing is Hon, I don't like girls, not that way. I don't think I ever have, and when Oro rises to a greenrider whos a girl, I don't know how I'm going to deal with it. I found my place here," he said at last, not looking at her face, "And its not with girls." He finally looked at her. "I'm sorry." And he truly meant it.
She thought about what he said a moment before asking quietly, "Why are you telling _me_ this, I'poro?"
"You're my friend and you deserve to know that." I'poro sighed, here came the hardest part. "I know you like me Honalyse. I can just tell when it comes to attraction. I've known from almost the first day we met. But you don't want me, I like men too much. And I know there's someone out there for you. Much closer than you think." He braced himself for the waterworks.
"Look, its no secret you're a blue rider, I'poro. And though, yes, I like you, I really never had serious hopes for anything between us." Something inside had always told her it would never be. Even if he had liked girls.
I'poro blinked. That wasn't what he'd expected at all. "You... you're ok with that?" He shook his head, she'd just said that, don't beat a dead topic, he told himself. "Nevermind. There's one other thing. I'm not sure on how much you know, but B'lamick's been drooling over you since you met. And I promised him I'd talk to you." Of course the plan had been to devastate her and she'd go running into his arms, but drudges can't be choosers.
"Talk to me about what, exactly?" she asked suspiciously.
"Um, how much he wants to share your bed." I'poro's voice sounded as if she should have already known this. "He's crazy about you Hon."
Her face scrunched slightly. "And why are _you_
telling me this? Can't B'lamick speak for himself?"
"Oh he could." I'poro said sardonically. "Now you being able to understand what he said would be a different story. He gets so tongue tied around girls." I'poro grinned at his best friends foolishness.
Shards. Just what she needed. Another puppy following her around. "Well, I'm sorry, I'poro, but I'm not sure B'lamick is really my type..."
"He'll be devastated." I'poro said with a bit of unfelt pity for his friend. "But I'll just have to find someone more willing to share his bed. I'm sure he'll feel better with a warm body next to him." I'poro grinned. "When his dragons old enough of course." He quickly explained. "But until then can we just pretend we never had this conversation? At least no the B'lamick part. I want to have a girl waiting in the wings when I tell him."
Honalyse felt as though she were letting I'poro down. Whether or not he wanted her, she still wanted his good opinion. "Well, if all you want is someone who can sleep with him, I can do that, if you like."
"I think that would defeat the purpose sweetie." He said with a wan smile. "Don't worry about, B'lamick will recover. I could personally care less," I'poro said in a fast change of topic. "women are just to complicated for me. I'll stick with nice handsome men." He said smoothly as he lay back on his towel.
"Trust me, nice handsome men are just as complicated,"
Honalyse sighed thoughtfully.
"Maybe the ones you have to look at." I'poro retorted, but his grin took the sting from his words and the wink showed his jest.
Honalyse shrugged with a small, amused smile. "It's just my luck, I guess."
