The Companionship of Flits

Writers: Draconafin, Roxanne
Date Posted: 12th July 2007

Characters: Arathisa, Jenasie
Description: Arathisa and Jenasie have a chat about the acquisition of firelizards
Location: Dolphin Hall
Date: month 4, day 16 of Turn 4

Jeansie had just finished the last of her hide work for now and was calmly seated near the kitchens looking at a now stuffed Chino. "You know if you keep interrupting my work like that I'm going to have to kick you out." The firelizard made no reply other than curling up in a tight ball and dozing off on his full stomach.

Arathisa watched the journeywoman as she talked to the flit and wondered what it would be like to have a pet. She really couldn't wait until she was old enough and far enough into the craft to have a dolphin partner. She wondered if there would be any way for her to get a flit of her own. Thinking that maybe Jeansie would know, she approached the dolphineer. "Excuse me, Journeywoman Jeansie. Can I ask you a question?" she inquired politely as she had been taught at home. She still found it difficult to lose some of the prim and proper-ness that had been drilled into her since she was a small child.

The dolphinner looked up when she heard the question. She was greeted with a familiar face, one of the apprentices from the hall Arathisa. "Of course Arathisa, anything" She gestured, signalling the apprentice dolphinner could sit down and join her.

"I was wondering about your flit. How did you get him?" she asked as she sat down not far from the journeywoman Jenasie was momentary stunned by the question but smiled and then looked form Arathisa to where Chino was sleeping. "This little rascal?" she half questioned back. "I was lucky enough to come across him on the beach when he hatched." It was lucky, most flit eggs these days were handed out so people didn't end up with whole a miniature wing of firelizards following them around. That and often they went to people such as Lord Holders, rather than crafters.

"That is unusual. I know that most people get their flits from people who have gold flits. I'd like to have a flit someday, but I don't know anyone who has a gold other than our Hallsecond. I don't think that she would give her gold's eggs to just anyone." Arathisa said surprised that Jenasie had happened upon her flit. There had been a few clutches of eggs at home, but her parents had told her that she was too young to have a pet when she had asked about getting one.

"Hmmm ... " Jenasie mulled over it, staring at the sleeping Chino. "I don't know of anyone at the Weyr who has one, ..." The Dolphineer paused. "X'amor might though" She finished, thinking about the bluerider who she was deeply involved with.

"Oh? I haven't been up to the Weyr yet. Everyone has always told me that the Weyr is a dangerous place for a respectable young woman. Not that I was ever considered respectable as I wanted to be a crafter not a holder's wife like my family wanted me to be. That's how I ended up here." she replied. She was too busy catching up with her studies to visit the Weyr and was actually a tad scared of what she might find at the Weyr. The hall was the first place she had been other than her home hold.

The dolphineer gave a small chuckle "That it can be" she returned lightly to the statement about the Weyr being a dangerous place for women, there were plenty of dragonriders capable of sweeping a woman off her feet. Jenasie looked at her, "Well with female crafters more common these days you picked a more interesting lifestyle" she added with a smile, remembering how easy it had been for her to make that choice.

"I certainly find it more interesting. I'll have to make a venture up to the Weyr sometime. Thank you for your information. I won't take up any more of your time this evening." she replied with a smile. She still couldn't get her mother's intonations of being polite and not bothering people out of her mind.

Jenasie gave a smile back "Think nothing of it, If you want same company when you head up to the Weyr all you have to do is ask" She added looking at Arathisa, implying that she'd be more that happy to walk up to the Weyr with her, if she wanted. Chino then decided to open an eye and looked at both of them before giving a chirp. The Dolphineer bit back a laugh "Looks like you have two offers there"

"Thanks, I might take you up on that offer soon. I should be getting back to my studies." she replied smiling shyly at the journeywoman and the firelizard before heading off to her bed and the book she was currently working her way through.
