A More Simple Life

Writers: April, Vix
Date Posted: 14th July 2007

Characters: D'wol, Ch'bal
Description: Dirwol and Chabal discuss their feelings toward possible Impression and what they want to do with their lives.
Location: Dolphin Cove Weyr
Date: month 4, day 13 of Turn 4

Dirwol was walking on the beach when he noticed someone in the distance also walking. He smiled. He loved this time of day. It was the time of day when everything was getting ready to settle down. His young gold lay across his shoulder. Her small tummy was already rounding from her recent flight. He waved a hello to the other person as he caught up.

Chabal glanced back and waited, though he felt tired and wanted nothing more than to trudge back to the candidate barracks and collapse into bed. He had spent a good deal of the day working in the beast barns, mucking out stalls and hefting sacks of feed. His only break had been to attend candidate classes, during which he had felt his brain crammed with information about dragons and their riders, information that had never interested him before moving to the Weyr and possibly - probably - would be of no eventual use to him. However, he had been taught to be polite, so he smiled and waited for the person who had hailed him to draw abreast of him.

"Good evening." Dirwol greeted the young man.

"Uh. . . I suppose. I mean, good evening." The beastcrafter's eyes were drawn to the firelizard as the sun caught the gold of her hide.

Dirwol smiled. He had become used to the awe his little Treasure caused in others. "It's always nice to come out here and enjoy the peace after a long day."

"It's usually peaceful," Chabal agreed, looking over the fairly calm water that was so recently anything but peaceful.

"Yes, it has it's moments." He smiled, "Care for some company on the trip back to the weyr?"

The other candidate nodded. "Why not? Though I'll warn you that I'm not good at conversation."

"No problem. I'm more of a listener myself. Though, I do find the weyr refreshing." He smiled.

"It's definitely different." Chabal thought to himself that there was no denying that - which was one of the reasons that he spent as much time as possible in the familiarity of the beast pens. "Of course, I'll probably be leaving here after the Hatching."

"You do not believe you will impress?" He asked curiously.

The other candidate shook his head. "No. I'm meant for a more simple life, not that of a dragonrider."

"What will you do if you do impress?" He asked.

"I haven't really thought about it because I don't picture it happening," Chabal stated, only now allowing himself to entertain the thought. "If by some odd chance it would happen, I'd have to stay, wouldn't I?"

"Would it bother you to stay?" Dirwol asked. He glanced up as they reached the Weyr. "Perhaps you need to think on how you would answer that question.

"Perhaps I do," the other candidate admitted, though he could not imagine why.
