"Why the long face, bronzerider?" Harki slid onto the bench opposite U'kaiah and set her breakfast tray down, managing to slosh her klah over the rim of her mug. She'd never been particularly co-ordinated first thing in the morning. "You look like someone kicked your dragon."
"Oh, do I?" he asked, making a rather poor attempt at a smile. "No no, just... Too early in the morning I guess. How are you, Harki?"
"Fantastic." The greenrider's expression took on a far-away cast as she remembered V'kelo's goodmorning kisses, and the way they'd parted when he'd left her weyr... She came back to herself with a start, belatedly realizing that U'kaiah was looking at her funny. "Yes.
Good. Very."
A slight smile creased the corners of his lips as he looked at her suspiciously. "Harki, for a moment there you looked positively...
wistful." "Yeah. For my bedfurs." She snorted and reached for her klah. "I hate morning drills. I wish D'wrayt started them all later."
**I don't smile like that for _my_ bedfurs...** U'kaiah thought, rather amused at just how girly Harki had looked. "It's good for you. I think you like your bedfurs a little too much."
"Humph." The klah was hot and burned her tongue. "That's rich, coming from the Lord of the Bedfurs himself."
"Yes," he grinned smugly, "but I believe that's referring to my love of the women who share my bedfurs, not the furs themselves."
"Same thing."
U'kaiah stirred his porridge absently with with his spoon. "So are you pinning for your bedfurs? Or was there someone in them you're thinking of?"
"Maybe a bit of both," Harki said, suddenly annoyed with him for being so perceptive. "Why - was yours empty, and that's why you're so perky this morning?"
Like he needed the reminder of how empty his bed had been! "I'm just a little distracted is all."
"Oh? Tell me - I am Harki, Fixer of All Problems!" Harki sipped at her klah - carefully this time - and smiled over the rim. "Well, most problems, anyway. Except for early drills. Which, might I add, are entirely your own fault."
"My fault?" U'kaiah cried indignantly, preferring playful banter to heartfelt confessions. "No no no, my dear, I am a servant to the Weyrleader's will, same as you."
"Oh, don't give me that. I know you. You're a masochist. You _like_
torturing everyone with early mornings... or, wait. Is that a sadist that likes being mean to other people? I can never keep them straight..."
"I'd offer to give you a demonstration to help you remember, but it just isn't my kind of kinky," U'kaiah chuckled and took a sip of klah.
The greenrider rolled her eyes. "You're such a prude, U'kaiah."
The bronzerider snorted. "You of all people should know that isn't true. Have I ever refused one of your whims?" Actually, Harki had proven very educational to a young, inexperienced bronzerider in the distant past.
"You just did refuse me!" Harki made a face and took another sip of klah. "And which would you prefer to be in this case, Harki? The giver or the receiver?" He was actually curious what her answer would be.
Her smile was more than a little predatory. "Why don't you talk D'wrayt into letting me out of morning drills, and I'll show you?"
Ooooo he liked it when she got that look in her eye! The most wonderful things tended to follow! Alas... "Well, I might be able to convince him to let you off, but I doubt he'd let me since I'm leading drills for my wing, so we're just going to have to continue this conversation another time."
"You could cancel your drills if you wanted to," Harki grumbled, not really serious. She tried a bite of porridge, then picked up the roll she'd plucked from a basket at the food line. A line appeared between her eyebrows as she stared at it. "No way... is that a grub!?"
U'kaiah wasn't quite sure she said what he thought she said. "Is what a what?"
"Shells- that's disgusting!" Harki dropped the roll onto her tray. A blind worm poked its head out of the crust and waved cheerfully at U'kaiah as the greenrider removed her klah and porridge and stood.
"Excuse me, U'kaiah. I have to go yell at someone."
"Yeh," he frowned, looking at the little intruder, "I think I'm done too."
"What a way to start your morning," Harki muttered as she picked up her tray and went to find a drudge to chew out.
