Harila wiped the sweat from her forehead and sat back on her heels. She's been chopping up meat bits for Wosaith for a few minutes now and she was already feeling tired. Working with her new dragon sure kept her busy, but she wouldn't trade it for anything in the world. "Oi, this is tiring," she mumbled to herself, then stood up and started chopping at meat again.
"Try turning the blade at an angle and running it lengthwise down the meat." Cherlyn told the girl as she waddled up. The Weyrlingstaff had been short a few people this morning and it wasn't like Cherlyn had anything pressing to do. As long as none of the weyrlings did anything rash she felt safe helping them feed their dragonets.
"Oh! That makes all the difference in the world!"
Harila said after trying the new technique. She glanced over at the pregnant greenrider and smiled. "Thanks! Wosaith seems to be always hungry, but we were told that the appetite would slack off as she grows up. I can't wait until she can hunt herself,"
Harila said and laughed. "It gets awful easier after that." Cherlyn agreed. "And you stop waking up in the wee hours of the mornig because your dragons hunger is influencing your own." Cherlyn grinned. "Just wait a few years after that to get pregnant. 'Cuase then your up in the morning throwing up."
Harila shuddered. "I HATE throwing up," she replied. "I'd rather avoid the whole pregnancy issue for a while, thank you! I think I have my hands full as it is."
"That they are and they will be for the rest of your life." Cherlyn said. "If I hadn't had complications I'd still be washing Lueanth and flying in the Queens wing."
"Who's been washing Lueanth for you?" Harila asked curiously.
"Most of the time friends will but drudges did it once, very badly I might add, and I had this really nice bronzerider offer one evening." She smiled at the myriad of people she'd met since that fateful flight.
Harila smiled. "That's good! At least you have people to help you, then. When I was a Candidate, I loved helping wash the dragons. It was fun! Although, now I have one of my own, so it seems like all that practice is finally being put to good use!"
"You'll use it everyday too." Cherlyn said. "That little green will get bigger and bigger until you'll thank Faranth everyday that there are almost always willing candidates. Just be glad she isn't a gold."
Harila laughed. "Yes I am! For one, she won't be as big as her mother or any other gold. Plus, I don't have to worry about all the responsibilities the goldriders have to deal with. I prefer being a greenrider definitely!"
"Not to mention no broody queens, or over cocky bronzriders or dancing with Lord Holders or their sons. Yes I'd much rather ride a green." Cherlyn agreed.
Harila shuddered. "When you put it like that, I'm more and more grateful for Wosaith." She finished chopping the bowl of meat just in time for Wosaith. }:Where are you? I'm hungry:{ "Well, she's awake and hungry now. I need to go see her. I'll come visit you though, if you want company!"
"Sure. Stop on by one evening when you're not to tired. We can talk." Cherlyn said.
"Thanks! It's nice talking to other riders and getting advice from you all," Harila said and winked. She started trotting back towards the Weyrling Barracks so she could gather Wosaith. She waved over her shoulder and took off running as Wosaith started getting worked up. "Bye!" she called, her voice floating back behind her. Cherlyn waved at the girls back. She remembered the days that Lueanth needed to be fed at all hours of the day. She smield at the memory as she went off to help another weyrling.
