Hartam sidled up to the hefty-looking man near the bar. "This is definitely a different place to work, isn't it?"
"It's a nice change in pace, that's for sure." Sealamin replied as he scanned the room. He had learned how to converse and keep a lookout for trouble after his fifth turn with the caravans as an outrider.
"You're probably better at this than I am," admitted the harper, "but has there been much sign of trouble?" He was able to speak with sincerity - like most harpers, he was trained to read what was going on around him, but this new environment presented challenges of its own.
"Not really. It's still early."
"What do you expect for tonight?"
"I always expect that things will run smoothly, but it doesn't always go that way. I've learned to be ready for anything and expect anything to happen. Any new songs?" Sealamin asked as he had enjoyed hearing the harpers perform each evening.
"Not tonight, though I've a few that are in the works," admitted the harper.
"Do you feel that the new ones are going over well, or should we stick to the traditionals?" Though the songs seemed to meet with approval, Hartam sometimes felt that he received more honest appraisals through bluntness.
"I think they'll catch on, but it might be good to toss in a few that they can sing along with to keep their interest." the guard replied as he knew that some of the patrons had complained about not being able to sing along for lack of knowing the lyrics.
Hartam nodded. "More familiar ones. I'll remember that." He noted to himself that he had been trying to present such a mix but perhaps the guard had a point. "I think that I'll try introducing any of the new ones on less crowded nights so that those present can learn the words and tunes and only playing them for crowds after they've received some exposure."
"That sounds like a good plan to me." Sealamin replied as he liked hearing the newer songs, but the more the crowd was pleased the less they were to create trouble for him.
"Aside from that, how do you think that it's going?" the harper asked the guard.
"Well enough. Only had one fight that I had to get involved with in the last sevenday. Gives people a place to gather and exchange news. I learn as much here as I did along the caravan route in regards to the goings on." the guard replied watching a particular table that had been getting progressively louder as he had been talking to the harper.
Hartam nodded, also scanning the crowd. "How about the mix of the crowd? Are the Hold folk accepting those who come from outside? Particularly the dragonriders?"
"I think they are getting used to it or at least have the manners not to say anything that might cause a fight." he said not remembering any major problems between holders and dragonriders.
"Good. Hopefully it will stay that way."
"I hope it will as well." he replied eyeing the table of drunken holders warily. He wouldn't bother them as long as they weren't bothering the rest of the patrons. If they started to get out of hand, then he would step in to put a stop to it.
