Aivorn knocked the Headwoman's office door. At the last minute, the master beastcrafter remember to take his cap off his head and check if had wiped his boots before coming in.
Standing near the door, trying to organize the ledgers on a shelf, Vanea grabbed the knob and tugged the door open, waving toward the desk. "Just place them over there." As she spoke, she glanced toward the face of the person waiting. "Oh, sorry. I was expected someone to bring me some new records to go through." She gestured the man inside and indicated a chair. "Please - come in."
"Good'day, headwoman," Aivorn greeted. "I'm not bringing anything. Should I?"
She shook her head with a tired smile. "I was expecting someone else. Please, sit. Tell me what brings you here." She crossed the room and settled herself into the chair behind the table she used as a desk.
"It's about my quarters. I have big family cot but I don't need it any longer. My daughter doesn't live with me anymore and it's too large for a lone man. I thought I could switch it to something smaller, like rooms here in main hold," Aivorn replied.
Vanea looked at him thoughtfully. "Are you certain you want rooms in the main building? Most of those associated with outdoor-type crafts prefer to be closer to their workplaces."
Aivorn shrugged. "I use the place only to sleep. The space is wasted on me. I also need to find a new job for my drudge. A good job. She did wonderful work, raising my daughter, and deserves something better. Now, she just cleans the place when it doesn't need cleaning."
"I'm sure that we can find accommodations for both of you, though she will have to see me herself so that we can talk and find what tasks suit her best." The Headwoman's mouth had formed a tight line. "I believe strongly in allowing all workers some choice in what they will do rather than simply assigning them."
"I'll talk with her," Aivorn promised. He releazed rather belately that he hadn't mentioned his plans to Heludia. The woman had been his daughter's milkmother and it would be rude to act behind her back.
"And your daughter," asked Vanea. "She has accommodations elsewhere?"
"Yes, her own weyr at Dolphin Cove weyr. She impressed some months ago," Aivorn replied. It felt like yesterday but Aishara had to be a senior weyrling by now?
"Of course," the Headwoman murmured. There was always a fuss when someone from the Hold Impressed, an outpouring of pride - and sometimes of criticism - but Vanea had not associated any of those who had gone to the Weyr with this man. "Are you looking for a private room or would you consent to share a room with another crafter?"
"Doesn't matter to me. However, I do work with irregular hours, so a possible room mate might get disturbed."
She glanced at his knots again thoughtfully; she had no other Masters who could be paired with the man and to pair a Master with a lesser rank was unthinkable. "I have a bedroom with private bathing room that might suit you, especially if you arrived late from the animal pens and wanted to get cleaned up. However, if you need a study, the only rooms available would require use of the public bathing rooms."
"No, I don't need a study. I have office at the beast hold," Aivorn said.
"Then this room would probably suit you." She pulled a record toward her containing a map of the Hold, running her forefinger across it until she found the place she had mentioned. "It's in this location. Would you care to see it first?"
"Sure," Aivorn grunted.
"Then let's go." Vanea rose to her feet and walked briskly toward the door. "If you like it, you can move in immediately."
Aivorn nodded and followed her out. "It may take me few days," he said.
"Once it's your room, you can do as you wish," she replied. "However, let me know when your moving is complete so that I can have some of my workers prepare your old quarters for someone else to move in."
"I will," the beastcrafter promised.
"Then let's show you that new home," she announced brightly, leading the way toward the stairs.
