Description: After Riyanth's flight, the Weyr leadership meets to discuss the changes that will come.
Location: Dragonsfall Weyr
Date: month 5, day 12 of Turn 4
Kapera looked around the conference table. Even though it was empty for the moment, she imagined it full of those she would need to address and prepared herself. Outwardly, she was washed and dressed nicer than usual, hair pulled back, calm and collected- it wouldn't do to start out her leadership role just out of the flight bed- but inside, her thoughts were a turmoil. Riyanth's flight earlier that day had changed a lot of things. It had been fantastic- flights were one of the best parts of being a goldrider, she thought. In the wake of the passion, it had taken her some time to realize what it meant- Riyanth had risen first. Kapera was now the Weyrwoman.
So she'd had Riyanth put out a call to the dragons of the riders she needed to speak to and directly speak to the non-riders she needed. The gold had been a bit put out at having to do anything not involving curling with her mate, but she relaxed and did it when Kapera pointed out it was to consolidate their power. Riyanth knew she was Weyrwoman now.
Kapera tried to ignore her nerves while waiting for the others to come.
"Madam," T'mahl respected politely as he entered the room, his undershirt clinging uncomfortably to his body as he had been sommoned straight from his lover's bed and had only enough time to jump into the bath for a quick scrub and a new tunic. He had been so happy that a gold had risen at last that he had decided to allow himself to celebrate a little bit more than he usually would. Shards, it had been nice...
But duty called, and finally, _finally_ he could truly be a Weyrlingmaster at last!
"Weyrwoman," Teseada's tone was respectful as she entered. Having been away from the Weyr anyway when the flight had happened, she had stayed where she was, waiting for someone to notify her that she could return.
D'wrayt had put in an order to the kitchens for a tray of refreshments to be sent to the council room before he started to get himself ready for the meeting. He was glad that he was still Weyrleader as that was one less change that had to be dealt with. Overall he was glad that one of the golds had finally decided to rise. He was looking forward to working with Kapera. He heard voices coming from the council room and headed that way. Upon arriving he saw T'mahl and Teseada had joined their new Weyrwoman.
"Thank you both, for coming so quickly. There should be refreshments arriving shortly." he said as he walked around to join Kapera and hopefully give her the strength to fight the nerves she had to be feeling. He know he had been very nervous the first time that he had been chosen as Weyrleader much to his surprise.
Tatitem had been less than pleased at the summons, but had resignedly disentangled herself from her lover and had bullied the kitchens back to work on the evening meal. She was next to arrive, bearing a tray of refreshments, and directed the drudge with her to serve fresh klah to those already arrived as she settled the tray on the table.
"Hello." Kapera whispered to D'wrayt as he came by, feeling a bit better at the Weyrleader's appearance. She was relieved his bronze had caught Riyanth, in a way. It meant stability, it meant someone experienced to help her along. It might not have been good if Riyanth had chosen a new Weyrleader and they'd both had to figure things out. She nodded at the drudge who brought her the klah and took a sip of it, needing it. She wasn't sure if she should begin this or if D'wrayt should, and she wondered if everyone who needed to be was here. Except for one Wingleader, it appeared so. She shifted in her chair, secretly glad for any excuse to put off speaking any longer.
U'kaiah knew he was late, and it seemed very unprofessional, but the bronzerider felt it was best to get out his frustration outside the meeting room rather than in it. Kalamath was in a terrible mood, as he always was after losing a gold flight. But more than that, U'kaiah knew that this had been his best chance he could have hoped for to finally take control of the Weyr. And he had lost _again_. The dragons know best, they always said. Well, just what was it that he was lacking that kept them from chosing _him_? Taking a deep breath, U'kaiah pushed his bitter disappointment down as deep as he could and walked into the room.
"Forgive me for being late."
D'wrayt glanced around at all the assembled ranking Weyr members and was heartened to know that they all were capable of doing their job. Once they had weyrlings again, his Weyr would be just fine. "Again thank you all for coming on such short notice. I know that you all have things to do, so we will keep this as short as possible. Your Weyrwoman and I would like to reassure you that there will be no changes in the way things are run unless necessary. I'm going to turn things over to our new Weyrwoman. Kapera, the floor's yours." he said making eye contact with all those present as he spoke.
"Thank you, Weyrleader." Kapera said politely. She wasn't sure what to say to them, really; D'wrayt seemed to have summed up the best of it for her already. "I can't say any of us expected Riyanth to rise first, but it is how it is." she admitted before shaking her head. "D'wrayt is correct. I'd like as little disruption in how the Weyr runs as possible, and that means letting all of you do your jobs, because you already know how to do them. Ideally the only difference will be that some of you will now report to me instead." She paused. "Anyone have any questions or comments?" She would value their input, of course.
Teseada raised her hand. "Will we have another goldrider transfer in to be your 'second?"
"Yes, what will Corvera do now?" U'kaiah had not known the acting Weyrwoman as well as he known Jaela, but they had worked well together.
"Corvera will lead the wing until Riyanth's clutch Hatches." Kapera said. "After that, she can choose to remain here, or she can transfer to another Weyr." If Kapera had been slated to be Weyrwoman and her Second's dragon had risen first, well, she probably would want a transfer. If Corvera wanted to go, that was fine by Kapera.
U'kaiah surely wouldn't blame Corvera for leaving. He would.
Weyrleaders can change at the whim of the dragons, but Weyrwomen...
They were usually there for life. Kapera was young. She might even see it out to the end of the Pass. Then again, Jaela had been young too...
"And if Corvera were to leave, would that just leave Teseada and Onnyth as your Second? Isn't she a bit young?"
Teseada was glad someone else had said that. She was young, and barely out of weyrlinghood. "I. I don't think I'm ready for that?"
"If Corvera leaves, then yes, we'll have a vacancy there. We could transfer in yet another goldrider, but Teseada is a Dragonsfall gold, which is important to the people of the weyr."
"We don't have to make a decision on that today, however." D'wrayt said attempting to reassure the young goldrider.
Teseada turned a smile on the Weyrleader, it did help to know that people were thinking of her.
"No, we don't. Are there any other questions?"
Teseada shook her head. She didn't have anything to ask, yet.
T'mahl shook his head. All he needed to know was that there were going to be Eggs on the Sands again. He looked over at U'kaiah and caught the Wingleader's eye for a brief moment. The Werylingmaster could tell the bronzerider didn't share his same enthusiasm, but he was sure the man was just exhausted. It had been a long day for them all.
D'wrayt looked around at the assembled leadership one final time before deciding to conclude the meeting. "Thank you all for coming. I think we've covered everything that was needed to be discussed. Go enjoy the rest of your day." he said gesturing towards the door. Everyone was tired as most of them had been involved in the gold flight.
