Description: J'nus wonders if Kapera needs to get out of the Weyr for a while
Location: Dragonsfall Weyr
Date: month 6, day 2 of Turn 4
Kopth assured him that Riyanth had said that Kapera was awake in her weyr, which was why J'nus knocked a second time rather than walking away. Perhaps it was impetuous of him since she was Weyrwoman now, and obviously wanted a little time to herself, but something made him knock anyway. An inkling of perverse, perhaps.
"I'm cooooming." the new Weyrwoman called out. She had been brushing her hair out and grooming herself, an action she usually undertook while only in her underclothes. The first knock had her reaching for the nearest pair of clothes. She pulled on the shorts and the shirt-
both things she wore for sleeping or lounging, she wouldn't wear them around the Weyr- and bolted for the door as the second knock occurred. In her haste at putting the shirt on though, her hair got mussed. She pulled the door open, hoping she didn't look too unprofessional. Who knew if it was a wingrider needing her aid, or a lower caverns worker with some report?
"J'nus!" she exclaimed. She felt an odd mixture of self-consciousness and of relief- someone with a work related request seeing her this way would be awkward. J'nus was okay, though, she didn't mind him catching her unawares. But she realized as she saw him that her clothes were, well, not the wear she'd wear around, and then the self-consciousness returned. What would he think of her? What would anyone passing think? "Come in." she said, hoping she could get him in and shut the door quickly.
The bronzerider eyed her long, bare legs and generate state of dishabille and realized that he shouldn't have knocked twice. "This looks like a bad time... I'm sorry to have disturbed you. I can come back tomorrow."
"No, no, you didn't disturb me. Or wake me up. I was awake, just taking care of my hair and dressing." she explained. "Few minutes later, and I would be fully dressed."
"Ah." J'nus let her usher him inside and shut the door. "I just wanted to stop by to see if you were busy this coming restday. I was thinking about going to Opal Cove Hold since there was a Gather, and seaport Gathers tend to be a little better attended than inland ones."
"It sounds lovely." Kapera said with a smile. She hadn't been sure if he would actually invite her. Things seemed different after the flight- people treated her different. She hadn't known if he would do the same. "I would love to accompany you. Unless something occurs in the meantime."
The bronzerider found himself pleasantly surprised. "Fair enough. I believe that it was you that told me that goldriders have to be around the Weyr, just in case. I'd imagine that goes more so for the Weyrwoman."
"I imagine so." She had more hidework now, but if she stayed up late she could finish it. "As the Weyrwoman, I should be allowed time for myself, however."
"Of course."
"Have you been to a Gather there before, or will this be a new experience?" She knew he wasn't a stranger to Gathers. She'd been to some since Impressing, but before only once.
"I've been before. Once or twice." He shrugged as the feeling of having interrupted her slowly crept back. "Opal Cove Hold is a pretty place, and they get a lot of merchants in from the Sea of Azov."
Kapera reached for the brush and started disentangling her hair, thinking about it. "It sounds lovely. I miss being near the sea." she admitted.
"That's the nice thing about dragons: Pern is open to you."
"Indeed." she said. "How have you and Kopth been?" she suddenly asked. "I haven't seen much of you lately."
"Well..." Kopth had lost Riyanth's flight with draconic good grace, but he hadn't felt as inclined as he had before to sidle up to the queen dragon, not with Treadoryth preening nearby. "We're fine. Kopth is nursing a bit of a bruised ego, but he'll have forgotten in a week or two that he's been feeling out of sorts at all. And I'm as well as can be expected. And-- yourself?"
"We're well. Rather busy, with the new work. And yes, draconic memories are a blessing." Human memories were harder. She knew Riyanth's choice and she knew who had caught her. D'wrayt was a fine Weyrleader though. "I'm getting used to it. I'll have to get used to more when Corvera leaves."
"When does she leave?" J'nus asked curiously. The former Weyrwoman had been keeping to herself for months now, and the Weyr was rife with speculation.
"After Riyanth's clutch hatches. A few months."
He nodded. "It's a good thing that the Gather is next restday, then, and not in a month's time when you're Weyrbound. Riyanth will be all right in leaving for an afternoon with a belly full of eggs?" Golds were unpredictable at the best of times, and even this soon after a flight she might not want to stray too far from the Hatching Caverns.
"I think I can persuade her to. You said it was coastal- she likes the sea and the feeling of sand, so if we could find her a spot to rest I think she'd be content." She wasn't looking forward to being weyrbound, though. She was going to go nuts.
The bronzerider smiled. "I'm sure that we can think of something. How does ten candlemarks into the morning sound, on the restday, for a departure time?"
"It sounds fine. Are we going to a different timezone?"
"No - Opal Cove's at the mouth of the river where it meets the Sea of Azov. It's only about fifty miles away. I'm surprised that you haven't been before."
"Oh, I see. That isn't far at all!" she said in surprise. At his second comment, she flushed a little. "When Riyanth and I arrived, we got coordinates for all the Holds in our territory. But we never really went anywhere. Corvera was the Weyrwoman, I didn't need to introduce myself. Now I suppose I'd have to go and meet everyone."
"That might not be a bad idea, and from what I've heard the Lord of Opal Cove isn't a bad man." Although that did make taking her to a Gather more difficult... as the Weyrwoman she was obligated to pay a visit to the Lord, but would he let her explore the Gather on her own afterward? And would she want to go with a bronzerider when she could have a Lord at her elbow?
"We could always go on Kopth, with me in disguise." Kapera joked.
"Although..." A bugle sounded outside. "I don't think Riyanth likes that idea."
"I should hope not!" The bronzerider smiled. "Weyrwomen don't wear disguises. However, even if you do need to meet with the Lord, I'd still like to show you the Gather."
"Excellent." Kapera said. "I look forward to it."
