Teseada

R'haran went to the shelf to find the most recent binding of crafter contracts with the Weyr and was surprised to find it missing. For a moment the greenrider just stared at the gap where the heavy book should be and then he absently straightened the book either side of the gap.
It wasn't as if the contracts were particularly interesting, of themselves, and any crafter who had one in there would have his or her own copy so they would have no need to refer to the bound version which was no more than a collection of the last hundred or so contracts bound for convenience.

It was an odd thing for anybody to want, he thought, smiling as he realised that he was standing there looking at an empty space because he had wanted it.

He turned away and wandered through the shelving to the large reading tables, hoping to find the book left out, somewhere obvious.

It was at that point that the young goldrider came through the door, the book almost slipping through her hands. "Shards!" she muttered as she got the balance again. Why hadn't she just looked up what she needed here, instead of taking it away to her work area.

"Oops," R'haran said, reaching to catch the book, then finding it an unnecessary precaution as the young goldrider caught her balance. "Good save, weyrwoman," he said with a smile for the young woman who had been a weyrling when during his time as a weyrlingstaff assistant.

"Thanks," she said, a smile threatening to turn the corner of her lips upwards. "If only I'd just left this in here," she began. "I needed to update some of the most recent records, and wanted to make sure I used the same style as my predecessors."

"Why don't you make a copy of the correct 'style' for each job and keep them in your office?" he suggested. "Once you no longer need to refer to them you might be able to pass the examples on to another young weyrwoman who needs them. Some kindly predecessor of mine has done just that."

"Now that does sound like a good idea," admitted Teseada.

"It might save you lugging these around. Some are quite hefty. Would that one be crafter contracts? It's not on the shelf, but I haven't had a good look around yet." If the weyrwoman had the book it would save what could be a few candlemarks of searching the large, cluttered room.

"It is indeed, with all the Starsmiths expected in shortly, we needed to have some drawn up in case they decided to stay for a while."

"Ahh." R'haran nodded. "And are you brining it back because you've finished with it?"

"I am now."

"Then I can take it off your hands," he said, holding out his for the weighty binding.

"You're more than welcome to it."

He tucked the book under his arm. "I just thought it might be wise to read all the contracts that have been signed since I was last in this sort of administrative role." That had been a few Turns ago ... Four?
Six? He didn't want to think it was many more than that.

"There are quite a lot of those."

"Ah, well, I'll be spending a few afternoons at the task, then," R'haran said in a resigned tone. The advantage he had was that, for him, once read everything was always remembered. He would only have to do the reading once and then keep up to date with each contract as it was filed.

"Probably as many as I did checking them out in the first place."

"It's good information to have, though, isn't it? A knowledge of the services contracted for and agreed to."

"It is, but I hope I don't have to go through that little lot again in a hurry."

"But no doubt there's something else just as weighty and - er - less than interesting that needs your attention now?" he asked, his tone teasing. Being a young dragonrider was an exciting time for most; being a young weyrwoman was quite different.

She grinned, recognising it as teasing now, although once she would have taken it seriously. "Not unless you count a gold dragon that is in need of a very good scrubbing."

"Sadly my girl is sleeping, so I have no excuse."

"Although I bet she can be just as insistent when she wants."

"I thought it was just a female thing," R'haran said, teasing again.

"No, it's a dragon thing."

"Perhaps it is," he agreed. "I'll get off to my office and get started on this. You have a good day, weyrwoman."

"And you, Weyrharper."
