Just Like That?

Writers: Emma, Jane
Date Posted: 17th December 2007

Characters: Hanni, Sahna
Description: Hanni gets help with dragon washing from Sahna and Sahna learns something new.
Location: Dragonsfall Weyr
Date: month 7, day 10 of Turn 4

Sahna watched the woman with the small green dragon with interest, even more interest than she had been watching the whole picture of activity around the indoor Weyrlake that was now exclusively used for dragon washing.

The rider wasn't very old, in Sahna's opinion, and the green was very pretty and dainty, surprisingly different from R'haran's Evielenth whom the girl knew best. Sahna hadn't known they could be so different among the same colour.

"In you go," Hanni told the green aloud. "If you get yourself wet first, it makes it easier to scrub you." To those words, the green ambled in, dunking herself and splashing her rider with a flick of her tail. "Hey!
Ease up on that," appealed Hanni.

Sahna couldn't help but laugh at the dragon's deliberate splashing of her rider. Evie had sometimes played with them, when they had helped bathe her in the lake on the plateau above the Weyr, but in this indoor lake she just walked in and soaked. R'haran said it was because the cold make her feel her injuries and so she just liked to get in and warm up.

}:You should be as wet as me,:{ noted the dragon, amusement evident in her mental voice as she looked back at her rider. }:The small one over there thinks so too.:{ Hanni turned to where the child was laughing, and waved to her.

Sahna peered around behind her to see who the greenrider was waving at, but there _was_ nobody. Tentatively she waved back and sidled closer to the lake edge.

The wave turned to beckoning. **Do you think she'd like to help?** asked Hanni of her green.

}:Perhaps,:{ was the reply. }:She is small though.:{ Sahna edged closer to the young greenrider and the dragon. "Hello," she said uncertainly.

"Hello," replied Hanni. "You were watching us?" she asked.

"Yes, if you don't mind. I watch Evie, but she just sinks down and only leaves her nose out."

"Evie?" questioned Hanni, it seemed to be a nickname, or was that a name for a flit she wondered. "Samdrath and I aren't mad that you were watching, we actually thought you might like to help."

"I've helped with Evie while she was swimming in the outside lake. Her name's really Evielenth, but R'haran calls her Evie."

"The Weyrharper?"

Sahna nodded felling quite proud that R'haran was referred to by his new appointment. "He adopted us. He's our uncle, really."

"So you'll be wanting to stand too, once you're of age then?" asked Hanni as she sorted out her washing gear.

"Perhaps." Sahna wasn't entire accepting of R'haran's assurances that she could do anything she wanted to in the way of crafting or work around the Weyr or Stand if she was suitable. Though she was sure he wouldn't _lie_ to them, some of the possibilities seemed incredible.
"We would have to` be Searched, he said. Were you Searched?"

"No, I wasn't born here either. I went to ask the Weyrwoman, they said that if I asked her she might let me stand for the clutch her gold had just produced."

"But - I thought you had to be born here to just be able to ask."

"If you're born here, you can stand. If you aren't well a search dragon needs to find you if you live at a hold or hall. But if you move here, you can ask the Weyrwoman or Weyrleader for their permission."

"_I_ can? Just like that?"

"Yes, you can. I think they like it if you do that. Something about showing you have character."

"I think I have character," Sahna said, perhaps a little uncertainly, "but I might have to wait until I'm twelve."

"That can't be too far away, can it?" The girl looked as though she might be pushing twelve turns already, but sometimes you just couldn't tell.

The girl stood a little straighter and looked very pleased with the greenrider's guess. "I'm still ten."

"Well I guess you have two turns left to practise on other people's dragons then," said Hanni with a grin.

"Washing them?" Sahna guessed. "I don't mind that."

"Wait until you have a weyrling green that needs it every day," teased Hanni gently as she sorted out the brushes they would use. "But by then you'd not trade her for anything on Pern."

"I wouldn't," Sahna assured the greenrider fervently. "I really wouldn't."
