"Hello, Vanea, there you are. I've been looking for you," Corowal said, sticking his head inside to the Headwoman's office. He was on good mood and seemed to be bubbling with enthusiasm like a young boy.
"Lord Holder!" She exclaimed in surprise at seeing him, shoving aside the hides that were strewn across her desk. "I'm sorry but I received no message that you wished to see me."
"That's because I didn't send one. I got bored sitting in my office and went to search for you myself. I may be Lord holder but I can still run my own errands," Corowal said.
"Yes, sir. Of course, sir." She gestured toward a chair, wishing that she had had more warning and could have cleaned up some of the on-going records that cluttered this work space. "Have a seat."
"How are the preparations for the runner race going on?" Corowal asked and pulled the chair for himself.
She pulled one of the stacks of papers toward her. "The Hold is ready, with rooms cleaned and prepared for guests. We have only to make the beds and freshen them a little before those who are staying arrive. Food is also on order, with much of it measured and waiting for the day before the race." She glanced down at her notes. "We still need some extra workers to help us as the guests start arriving."
Corowal nodded. "Do we need to ask the minor holder to borrow their people?"
"Possibly," she replied. "We'll need those to cook and serve meals for the guests who will not be housed in the Hold, those who will be camping on the grounds."
"Speaking of guests, I received a letter from my brother. He and his wife are coming for a visit. Make sure you have a room reserved for them here at the hold," Corowal asked.
"Your brother. . ." she made a quick notation on a scrap of paper. She had begun allocation of rooms, but had left several vacant - just in case. This would require some reassignment, with the Lord Holder's brother meriting one of the better rooms. "Have you any idea how many other special guests will be attending?"
"No, more and more people are expressing their interest every day. I even got inquiries from Amber Hills Hold! After a slow winter, people seem very eager to have some excitement in their life."
"Oh." She thought for a moment and then shrugged her shoulders. "It'll have to be those who commit to coming here first will get the rooms and for the others we'll need to make camping out seem exciting."
"Let's just hope the weather favours us," Corowal said.
"That's something I can't plan," stated Vanea, though visions of even muddier floors crept into her thoughts.
"So true," Corowal sighed. He returned his mind back to the planning."I probably have to host some sort of formal dinner or supper for more important guests."
"I suppose you should do that," agreed the Headwoman. "I'd suggest that you also host a less formal get-together for those guests and a few more. One could be the night before the races and the other could take place a few candlemarks after the races had ended."
"Good idea," Corowal nodded.
She jotted down another notation. "In that case, you need only decide which you'd prefer for which night."
"The less formal night before and the formal after the races," Corowal decided.
"I'll draw up some possible plans and menus for each and get them to you as soon as possible. You need only decide how many guests you will invite to each."
"Right. My brother and his wife are automatically included, presuming they make it here in time. It depends on riverboat's schedule," Corowal remarked.
Vanea nodded in understanding. "Why don't you draw up a list of those you would like to include in the formal dinner? Those who arrive the day before the list will be included in the informal dinner, along with any others we hear will be here and seem to be appropriate guests."
"The time is short," Corowal remarked. "I never intended it to be this big thing."
"You're the Lord Holder now. That makes everything you do much grander."
"So I've learned," Corowal chuckled.
"And fortunately, you can call on many more to help you," she continued, hoping that those available would be enough.
