D'cal took a deep breath as he watched the girl lean against the feeding pen rail. Shards, this was awkward. And yet the bluerider felt that an apology was due. But, how does one apologize to someone they barely know for something like this? Was it even necessary? They had covered Flightroom etticate in his weyrling training classes, but no one really talked about what you should do _after_ the Flight was over. He had done exactly as he had been taught - exchanged names with her, and complimented her dragon on her long and high flying. D'cal explained that he had a woman waiting for him, thanked her for the wonderful Flight and muttered something about his duty to her lifemate, but as soon as his pants were pulled over his hips he was out the door, with shirt and belt slung over one shoulder, boots tucked under his arm and hands busily trying to rebutton his fly.
And as a result of that polite, but hasty departure to exhaust the rest of his Flight lust with Dyaera, who he mistakenly had believed cared one way or ther other, he had forgotten the girls name as soon as she had uttered it. That is, until her father unknowingly reminded him of it.
Had he left soon after? Did she have someone to run off and meet too?
Had he left her totally alone in a big bed in a strange room with a cold empty space beside her? Or was she glad to have him gone?
Perhaps he really didn't want to know. After all, she may well have forgotten his name as fast as he had hers. Maybe this was all just a mistake. He should just let the past stay in the past and not say anything. Shards, she might not even recognize him. After all, they hadn't really been paying much attention during the Flight, and he for one had been too shy to really look at her once they had woken up. He wouldn't have known her now if Aosorath hadn't asked her lifemate where he could find her. D'cal was pretty sure she looked familiar, like a face he had seen in flashes of a wonderful dream. And it had been wonderful... For him at least.
Hadn't Aosorath said he was her first? She had been their first too.
The bluerider had been the first man to share her Flight bed. Oh shards, what if he had done something wrong? What if the whole experience had been a huge disappointment to her? What if she had never made any attempt to find him because she never wanted to see him again?
Maybe he should just go, D'cal decided, shifting from one foot to the other. Yes, he would just forget it. After all, she wasn't expecting him. She probably just wanted to feed her dragon and go eat dinner.
Why bother her? D'cal spun around on his heal. No, he shouldn't bother her. Just let the past stay in the past. He'd just be a bit more attentive next time.
And yet, running away like this... it felt cowardly. Childish.
Immature. Inexperienced. He felt like he did the first day he had come to the weyr - lost and out of place and unsure what to do with himself.
D'cal hated that feeling. As much as he hated the mortifying embarrasement that facing her might bring, he hated the thought that his own fear and insecurity would get the better of him more.
Steeling his resolve he turned back towards her. He almost jumped out of his skin when he realized that she too had turned and was now looking straight at him. Shards...
Aishara had been watching Ayumith's eating when she had felt the eyes on her back and turned to look. It took her a while to connect the face with a name. He was not in her wing. He was the bluerider whose dragon had won Ayumith's mating flight. "Hi, D'cal, was it?" she greeted and flashed a smile.
"Yes, that's it. Aishara, right?" He smiled, though in truth he wanted to fall right through the grassy ground beneath his feet. "I wasn't sure you'd remember me..."
"I try not to forget the men I've been with," Aishara said.
Oh, so she'd been with a few... Of course she had... It just meant there were that many more he probably had been compaired to. "Well, we appreciate that. Then men you've been with I mean." Faranth, what an idiot! "Not that we were _really_ together, but..."
Aishara lifted her eyebrowns. "Are you trying to say someting?" He was not making much sense to her. Of course there were men, in plural.
After the weyrling ban had been past, she had started enjoying the new freedoms that weyr offered.
"No! Shells no," he quickly assured her. "I just meant that you and I hadn't really been together like you've been together with other men. I mean, you didn't exactly _choose_ me. That's all I meant." **I think...** He should never have come down here!
"D'cal, are you trying to apologize something? If you are, I'm not getting it," she asked, crossing her arms across her chest. "It was mating flight. Ayumith's first, yes. I have weyrbred relatives, I pretty much knew what to expect." Althoug she had been bit disappointed that he had not stayed. She had been still under the influence of dragonlust and would had liked to do it again. The way she had acted towards her grandmother had bothered her more than his arupt leaving. And that matter had been cleared too. She had apologized her granny and Aiele had only laughed and said: I've seen so many proddy greenriders that I recognize the signs!
"Well, I hadn't... actually started apologizing yet..." Or had he?
Shards, he was so confused. "I just... it was my first mating Flight too... Not my _first_, but the first we had actually won, and I think that I wasn't very considerate of you at the time, and for that I'm sorry."
"Well, it would have been nicer if you had stayed longer," Aishara admitted, cocking her head. "But if I didn't make an issue of it, why should you?"
"I guess I just had time to think about it," he shrugged. "I realized I might have been a little rude, considering... And I thought I should at least apologize."
"Consider yourself forgiven," she said. "You know, Ayumith is due to rise again soon, care to try winnig again?" She smiled mischievously.
D'cal blushed slightly, though he gave her the hint of a grin. He had rather hoped his blue would chase hers again. If they had won once...
"Well, I'll make you a deal. If we win again, I promise not to run away so fast."
"It's a deal," Aishara smiled.
