Panyin smiled as he watched the bustle and activity on the dock.
He had gotten word that his shipment had arrived. He had ordered a few replacement parts for his loom. He looked about for the person he was told to look for. He stopped a woman as she walked by. "I'm sorry but would you happen to know where I am to find Lineal? I need to get a package coming form the smith hall."
"Lineal's the brown-haired man making everybody laugh at the bottom of the landing stage." The woman smiled at the young man wearing weaver knots. "I'm Rahona, his wife. Come over and I'll introduce you."
"Then I stopped the right person." He smiled. "I'm Panyin by the way."
"It's a pleasure to meet you, journeyman," Rahona said, leading the man across to where her husband was chatting the with wharf workers.
"Lineal? This is Journeyman Panyin and he has a package from the Smith Hall that has travelled with us."
The tall man turned and smiled at the weaver. "We do indeed.
Small, though," he said, sketching the dimensions of the shipment with his hands. "Is that right?"
"Yes it should just be a few replacement parts for my loom." He smiled.
"I seem to have a knack for wearing things out. I figured it was time to get a few spares."
"I can send somebody for it - or would you like to come aboard?"
Lineal remembered from his childhood that people were often interested in looking around riverboats, even if they never got the opportunity to travel on them.
"Well, If your not to busy I would like a tour. I've always wanted to see a riverboat. But, if you are busy I wouldn't want to take up all your time." He said with a smile.
"Happy to take you around," Lineal said. "I was just filling in time, anyway."
"Well, then lead the way." Panyin said with a smile.
"I'll leave you in Lineal's care, then," Rahona said, abandoning the two men with a nod and a smile.
"She thinks I enjoy showing off the Sungazer far too much,"
Lineal said with laughter in his tone. "And perhaps I do."
"It's a thing to be proud of. It looks like a masterpiece.
Perhaps I will put it into one of my newest tapestries. It is of this very river. I think it would be perfect." He smiled as he mentally placed it on the tapestry.
"We'd be honoured if the Sungazer appeared in your work - or any of the riverboats," Lineal said politely. "This is the main deck, and serves as the cargo deck. There's next to nothing below decks so cargo can't be stored out of the way as it is on sea-going vessels."
Panyin glanced around with interest. It was larger than he had expected. He ran a hand along the ship wall and let out a whistle. "That is some nice craftsmanship. And it looks larger on the inside than I expected."
"Perhaps you'd better see the crew staterooms before you decide that," Lineal said with a grin. "Sometimes, when we're travelling empty, this whole area is open which gives us a bit of a top-heavy look." He pointed further down the deck. "The boilers are there and the engines at the back with the paddlewheel."
Panyin smiled. "I find it truly amazing how someone could live on one of these as it rocks about. I'd be afraid of getting sick. Does it rock all the more when empty?"
"Not really. Not when we're underway because the forward speed stabilises us. When we're tied up -" Lineal shrugged. "The river flows past us and the movement's not much. A bit restful, I find."
"Perhaps someday I will have to try a journey." He smiled as he finished his tour. "I must say I enjoyed the tour and can't wait to get to work on my tapestries. You my good sir have given me a new appreciation of riverboats. Perhaps on your next trip here I will have it finished and may be able to gift it to you. It will defiantly belong with you and your brave crew." Panyin smiled as he put his hand out.
Lineal shook hands with the other man. "I'll definitely come and see how you're getting on with it, anyway."
