Tell Me About Topaz

Writers: Cali, Jane
Date Posted: 10th May 2008

Characters: Trellyn, Swift
Description: The two talk of Topaz and future plans.
Location: Dolphin Hall
Date: month 9, day 27 of Turn 4

Swift liked feeding the people back from groundcrew duties on Threadfall days. He would have liked to have been part of the groundcrew himself, but kitchen workers were exempt from the roster simply so everybody could come back to a good meal. And the long-term Dolphin Hall resident enjoyed doing his bit to provide that.

Swift caught sight of a familiar face as the meal service ended and he was making the rounds with klah and cakes. He paused at the table, filling mugs and greeting the journeywoman: "Hello Trellyn. Haven't seen you for a long while."

"Hey Swift," Trellyn said with a grin to the friendly man, "I've been doing a rotation over at Topaz the last few months. What have you been up to?"

"Got married, expecting a baby," Swift said with studied casualness.
"How about you?"

The dolphineer chuckled, "I'd heard about you sweeping Kateena off her feet, I hadn't heard about the baby though. Congratulations!"

"I think Kateena did the sweeping," Swift admitted with a laugh. "I thought I was too old for her. Now, tell me about Topaz. How does it look?"

"It looks really good." Trellyn said emphatically. "They've got the main harbour cleared and there has been alot of rebuilding. There were more people there than I thought actually, but nowhere near their former glory."

"Do you think we'll move back?" Swift said, remembering the SeaHold with fondness.

Trellyn shrugged, "I guess. That was the plan anyways when we moved here. I don't know though, we've set up pretty good for ourselves here, and the dolphins might not be too keen to relocate back."

"And being by the Weyr is convenient ..." Swift mused aloud. "Less likely to get into the political troubles of a Hold."

"True, but not everyone likes it here so close to the Weyr, lots of green dragon flights to get used to and all." Trellyn countered thinking back to all the talk when they first moved, "And lots of people left friends and even family back at Topaz."

"Lots of people have no-one alive to go back to," Swift suggested sadly but then he smiled. "I _like_ the dragons."

Trellyn smiled, "I like them too. As do the dolphins. They got to play with them occasionally at Topaz, but here, it's almost a daily game for them."

"I don't know that I'd want to go back," Swift said thoughtfully. Life moves on, doesn't it? It's supposed to, not tack back over the same water."

"True," the journeywoman agreed. "But I probably won't stay here for that long either. I'll get posted out someplace eventually, and even that won't last forever. I guess I've just got that mover mentality you know? I don't try and get too attached to places."

"No? No home and husband and children in your future then?"

Ednan flashed in her mind for a moment, but as she pushed the memory of them together during her firelizard's flight away, she reminded herself that she couldn't dwell on what wasn't to be. "Nope," she made herself sound lighthearted, "At least not any time soon. Maybe when I'm old and retired I'll settle down."

"Babies? When you're old enough to retire?" Swift grinned. "It's inequitable but that only works for men."

"Well, then maybe I'll have to rethink using you as an example then?"
Trellyn teased.

"I'm afraid you will," Swift said. "Though if babies aren't an issue, then I can recommend getting married later in life to you. I think it's easier to value each day together when you're older."

Trellyn nodded and gave the man a smile. "Well, I'm in no hurry."
