"That's a fine looking one there lad," said the brownrider as he watched the boy oiling the weyrling bronze. "I'm sure you and he will do well together."
The newly renamed O'rian pushed his hair out of his eyes with a back of his hand and grinned. "I hope so. He's a bit b-r-o-w-n to be considered a classic colour, but he knows what he is."
K'deren couldn't suppress a grin as the lad spelt out the word. "What's his name?"
"Taoth. Short. Efficient. _Special_, apparently." Again the former apprentice healer grinned, his likeness to his father suddenly very apparent.
"Your father seen him yet?"
O'rian nodded. "He's been down a couple of times," he said warily, not sure how the Cyclone Wingsecond regarded his father.
"What did he say?" K'deren was interested to know what the bronzerider thought, no matter what his personal opinion might be. Even if he had caused the accident that caused him to lose his weyrmate, this lad was a different matter.
"Oh, you know. Congratulations. Do your best. Work hard. Sharding dark for a bronze. The usual sort of thing." It conversation hadn't been very easy and the most natural moment had been O'dan's comment about the colour of Taoth's hide, something that had riled the weyrling although it disturbed his supremely confident dragon not at all. "What did your father say to you when you Impressed?"
"That Donneth was the perfect dragon for me." K'sedel had known deep down that a steady brown would be good for his son, and he'd made a point of telling him that.
"Why?" O'rian considered how much somebody outside the bond could know of the personality of a young dragon and guessed: "Because of his colour?"
"Because no matter what people say, that dragon saw into you, saw what makes you be the person you are when he made his choice. I think he meant that there is something that when you see a dragon and rider together that just 'clicks'; that is right."
"Oh." He glanced at Taoth who was happily preening himself like an avian and getting his muzzle well-oiled in the process. The young man smiled but asked: "Do they ever not look right? A pairing?"
"I've seen some that I've looked at at first, and thought about,"
explained K'deren. "But even the most awkward looking pair find themselves."
The weyrling nodded. He had no doubts about himself and Taoth but occasionally he had heard people commenting about an 'odd' pairing and had wondered ... Not that it was going to concern him. He had Taoth and already he felt that they balanced each other; Taoth's self-assurance with his own caution and tendency to over-think problems.
Sometimes one or the other of them would be right, but hopefully most of the time they would work well together.
"I'm pretty sure we've already done that."
"Then you and young Taoth will be just fine."
The young man grinned. "Just weyrlinghood and then Thread to worry about, huh?"
"And flights, and responsibilities...."
"Oh yeah." Again the quick, charismatic grin appeared. "We'll be fine apart from all that."
"Concentrate on Weyrlinghood first, get through that and then see what happens."
"I will," O'rian promised, and Taoth echoed the sentiment with a light-toned rumble of confidence.
