U'kaiah's mind was still groggy as his eyes opened to a familiar ceiling. It was not his own, but he knew it intimately. He never had been able to make it back to his own weyr after winning a Flight. There was a gentle weight pressing into him as the girl lay still half on top of him where she no doubt passed out from utter physical and emotional exhaustion. His mind reached out questioningly to his bronze.
**Kalamath?**
}:Yes. She's beautiful and she is mine,:{ the bronze replied smuggly, satisfaction radiating through his thoughts.
"Thank Faranth," U'kaiah breathed softly as relief washed over him.
They had done it. **Jaela... We did it...**
Teseada shifted slightly as she awoke. Memories were hazy at first, but then things made sense. Onnyth had risen, and flown, chased by bronzes and browns. But who had won? She turned her head, "Not Y'nub," she said.
"No, I'm sorry. I'm not Y'nub," the bronzerider smiled as he reached up to brush a few strands of hair away from her eyes.
"I, I didn't want it to be him," said Teseada as she finally realised who lay beside her. "Anyone but him."
"It seems your Onnyth knew." Although she seemed to willingly choose Kalamath, a fact which was not lost on U'kaiah.
}:She wanted the best,:{ his bronze confirmed as he wrapped his tail protectively around the gold beside him. }:I am the best!:{ U'kaiah couldn't help but love his lifemate's assurance of that. He happened to agree, of course. "How are you feeling?" Hopefully her first Flight had been a good experience for her.
"Tired." Is that what she was supposed to say? It was the truth, the flight, the effort of keeping Onnyth from eating those herdbeasts when she shouldn't keeping her from Larweth and Y'nub had been wearing.
Onnyth meanwhile radiated sleepy contentment. }:This was the one _I_
wanted, I knew he was best for us. :{ "I didn't hurt you, did I?" That worried U'kaiah more than anything.
He knew that this had been her first Flight, and he hoped it had not been a negative experience for her.
"I don't think so," said Teseada as she shifted to lie on her side. "I, it felt good."
"Yeah, it sure did," U'kaiah sighed contentedly, tucking an arm behind his head.
"Are gold flights always like that?" she asked after a moment. "I felt like we were one, and so in charge out there."
"I think so," he nodded, shifting slightly into a more comfortable position. "When your dragon rises, that's when you truly become one creature."
"I felt, I felt ," she repeated as she tried to put her feelings into words. "Alive."
The bronzerider smiled knowingly as his fingers traced her arm absently.
"I know. It's a wonderful feeling, isn't it? Like flying with nothing beneith you."
"An amazing feeling," she said with a shy smile as she felt his caress.
He grinned as he saw her reaction. "It stays with you, doesn't it."
"I think it will for a while."
"Do you have anyone you want to share it with?" he asked curiously, knowing some people had a special someone they would like to explore these new feelings with.
"No," she said. Once she might have gone to Y'nub, but not now.
He wasn't sure if that was a note of resentment or resignment in her voice as his fingers brushed against her cheek. "You can share them with me, if you like."
"Are you sure you really want to?" she asked. Maybe Y'nub had been right, maybe all the brinzeriders were the same, only wanting her for what Onnyth could bring them.
U'kaiah smiled. As if he would just leave her after her first Flight! "It was a wonderful Flight, Teseada. I can think of no better way to celebrate."
"Then show me," she said softly.
