It wouldn't be long. The whole Weyr could sense that it would be
soon, and that would mean preparations would need to be made. Despite
the fact he was sure the Headwoman had everything under control, he
still felt the need to check on things himself.
So that lead to the Weyrleader himself knocking on the Headwoman's office.
Sol was in her office, thumbing through the latest stack of Candidates
for the upcoming Hatching. Unsurprised by the knock, and absently
wishing she had a dragon to tell her who it was, she called "Come!".
"Do you have a moment Headwoman?" asked K'reyel politely.
"Always for you, K'reyel. Weyrleader, now, hmm? Come in and relax
for a moment before you feel like all the hides in the Weyr are
hunting you." She waved him to a seat, and then got up herself to
fetch him something to drink. There were benefits to coming to the
Headwoman's office, after all.
"Something to drink?"
"Something cold if you've got it, juice maybe?"
"Of course, K'reyel. I've got juice, and klah, and something
stronger if you've a need for that. Start with juice?" She poured
him a nice glass and set it in front of him before joining him across
the desk. "What can I do for you today?"
"There's a hatching coming up," he began as he took the glass. "And
preparations need to be made, I need to know what you need from me."
Sol pushed forward the list of Candidates. "I've this list of
Candidates here. Have a look at them if you are interested. The
Weyrlingmaster will need to be briefed a bit on the timing, so he can
have them all ready when the Hatching begins." That would be K'reyel's
job. "OH, and also, what would you like for the Hatching feast?
Your job is pretty easy, actually." She grinned at him. "Be the
proud father, hmm?"
"I've some practice in that department, Mai won't let me forget that," he
replied to her last comment first. "As for the feast, I should leave that to
you and your staff no doubt. You won't let the Weyr down. Reaching
out he pulled the list of names close, "My daughter is on there," he
said. "She's just of age this turn."
Solieira returned his smile at the mention of Mai and nodded. "Your
daughter? Thats wonderful! She will follow a grand tradition in your
family, if she Impresses." She was quiet a moment as he looked over
the list. "Invitations to family and the local holders generally go
out a sevenday or so before we think the Hatching will happen. You'll
have to handle that as well, but thats about it, I think. "
"I'll have my wingriders on standby to bring people in, and one eye on
Reyela. It would be something if she did leave the sands a dragonrider
this first time from a clutch sired by my bronze. "
"That would be remarkable, K'reyel! I will keep one eye on her as
well." She smiled at him, adding in her head 'and all the others
too'. She tapped a finger on the guest list, pushing it toward
him. "I'd suggest taking this, also, to your Wingleaders and getting
some assignments for ferrying. That fool Daynar from the Smithhall
never comes, but if he came, he would probably insist on a bronze!"
She made a face, her opinion formed from some of the things Tsaera had
said about him.
"I hear he's particular, although I believe someone said his son was a
rider here - wouldn't her prefer to be brought by him?"
Sol laughed outright at that suggestion. "Not according to D'trian.
D'trian says his father was a Harper, not the Hallmaster. Apparently
Daynar disowned him when he Impressed Blue instead of Bronze! He's a
pain, Tsaera says, but he's completely perfect with his tithing."
"In that case he'll get a bronzerider if he accepts the invitation."
Sol shook her head definitively. "He won't come." She pushed aside
the hides and focused on K'reyel again. "You'll do fine, Weyrleader.
As
always."
"I'll try," remarked K'reyel. "Anything else I need to know?"
"I do not think so, K'reyel. I'll be here if you need anything at
all, though, hmm?"
