"Okay, we need one more player to have even teams," Corofel said, looking around himself to the group of boys he had gathered around himself. "Anybody know anybody suitable?"
"How about your brother?"
"Naah, he's lousy player and a bookworm," Corofel said dismissively and bounced a ball in his hand.
"I could play," piped in a young voice. "I'm pretty good. Or at least I try." Neabin stepped forward, realizing that at a turn less than the others and small for his age, he probably did not look like much of an asset for the game.
"Wass your name? Do you know the rules?" Corofel asked.
"Neabin." The boy drew himself up to his full height. "Back at Rapid Run Hold I played a bit." Neabin told himself that he wasn't really telling a lie – one time the older boys had let him play, mostly standing in one place and waiting, rather than his usual watching.
"Rapid Run Hold, where's that?" Corofel asked, he never heard of it before.
"Where I used to live," Neabin replied. He waved his hand vaguely, uncertain of the direction. "Out there."
"Whatever. Okay, in case the rules are different there, I just go thru the rules we play with you," Corofel said.
"We never get started," some muttered.
Neabin glared at those who were making comments. "I learn fast. Just explain and let's start playing."
Corofel went quickly thru the rules and then they started.

It was Corofel's turn as a batter. He hit the ball badly and it flew off to the wrong direction. There was a crash and musical tingle when it flew right through one of the hold's windows.
"Oh-uh!" Corofel sighed and added one of the more colourful profanities from uncle Zandan.
Neabin found himself walking even closer to Corofel as he watched the ball's route. "How much trouble are we in?"
"That depends. It was an accident," Corofel said and looked at the broken window.
The younger boy noticed that a few of the others had scattered from the playing field. "Should we stay or run?"
"If we run, we look guilty. Dad shouldn't be too angry, not with an accident. It would be different if we had broken it on purpose," Corofel said. There was already grown-ups coming. He recognized at least one of dad's stewards.
Neabin was pretty sure that his mother would be furious, but he _was_ with the Lord Holder's son. He stepped behind the older boy. "I'll take my chances staying with you."
