The kitchen hand checked the sand in the basket beside the ovens. It felt warm to touch, so it was probably fine. He poked his finger into the light coloured grains and it didn't feel any cooler, so it wasn't just the top surface. And then he looked at the little gold watching him and smiled. "Seems fine to me. After all, I only had to move them a few handspans to one side so I could clean up a spill."
"Eggs doing okay Swift?" Trellyn asked with an amused smile as she looked between her gold Carry and the kitchen hand.
Swift rocketed to his feet, feeling like a errant apprentice. "I was just checking ... since I had to move them." he nodded toward the little gold. "She didn't seem to mind."
Trellyn shot another quick glance at the queen as she flitted over to an open window for perch. Now that her champion was looking over the eggs she felt better about continuing her sunning. "I don't think she minded too much, but I got enough warning images that I figured I'd better peek in just in case she decided enough was enough."
"I'm sorry I disturbed you. We had a spill and I thought it best to mop under the basket ..." He sighed. "I hope you weren't in the middle of anything important."
She smiled, "You didn't disturb me. I've been getting flashes from Carry ever since the eggs got here. She'll calm down once the eggs get split up and sent on their way. She seems to forget about them once they're not in a big recognizable grouping."
"That's probably a good thing. I've told my little boy - Red - to stay away, but I think he already knew that." He smiled at the thought of his blue firelizard. "They're quite clever, or do you think leaving a gold to her clutch is instinctive?"
"Hmm," she pondered, "I don't know, but I'm sure it saves him a few nips by keeping his distance. I got several scratches from Carry when I was bundling up the eggs."
"Doesn't she know you're only going to keep them safe?"
Trellyn smiled, "You'd think so. Faranth knows I've tried explaining it to her, but for all they're smart, they're such dimglows sometimes."
"That must be instinct then. What do you do with them all? The eggs. Can you s-e-l-l them? Would you want to?" Until he had received the egg that contained Red he hadn't thought much about what the journeywoman did with the eggs.
"When I was at Topaz, that's what I did. There were so many there that needed so many things, I sold them all to help how I could." Trellyn explained, remembering the reconstruction of the Sea Hold. "Before that, I turned most of them over to the Hall. Mosler was always fine with letting me keep a few to give out to friends or to sell, but I guess I should check with our _new_ Hallmaster now, and see what she wants to do with them."
"Hmm." He grinned suddenly. "Maybe she will want the eggs sent far, far away so her Hall doesn't become overrun with firelizards. They are great friends, but sometimes when they get together and squabble outside the window ..."
Trellyn chuckled, "Hey now, don't blame all those on me! I've only given out a few. I think most of those come because they know you'll feed them!"
Swift looked embarrassed. "Well, it seems rude to feed Red in front of them ..."
"I probably wouldn't be able to resist their swirling eyes either Swift." Trellyn admitted with a conciliatory pat to his shoulder.
"Shall that stay our little secret then?" Swift said hopefully. He didn't want everybody knowing he was the reason all the firelizards were hanging around waking people up with their noise.
She chuckled at his expression, "I won't be telling anyone."
"Thank you, Trellyn. Now, since the eggs are all accounted for and checked, can I get you some klah?"
"Sounds delicious."
