This Time

Writers: AL, Jane
Date Posted: 12th September 2008

Characters: T'vanen, Bridinar
Description: Holder Bridinar has a few questions for the ever-visiting dragonrider, T'vanen.
Location: Garnet Valley Hold
Date: month 12, day 2 of Turn 4
Notes: Onyx Peak Hold

There he was again, that same bronzerider. Bridinar straightened as he
watched the creature sweep across the sky then come in for a landing.
So what was the excuse this time? Another delivery?

Bridinar couldn't help but be a bit concerned. He was quite a bit more
liberal than most men in the South - at least, holder men. His views
came from growing up in the North, but that didn't mean he didn't care
about his daughter. He knew what Briata wanted, and Bridinar wasn't so
sure the bronzerider was seeking out merely friendship with his little girl.

T'vanen stood off to one side as Qwarith rose back into the air, off to
find himself somewhere warm and less busy to loiter until his rider was
finished at the Hold. And now, the bronzerider turned, heading toward
the main Hold building and the Holder's daughter he hoped to find.

The holder stepped into the bronzerider's path and offered the younger
man a small smile. "Hello again, T'vanen. So what brings you to Onyx
Peak this time?" Of course, Bridinar had a feeling he knew the _real_
answer.

"This time ...?" the bronzerider straightened. "This time, Holder
Bridinar, I have come to invite your daughter to the Dragonsfall Weyr's
hatching, whenever it happens."

Well, the truth. That was rather unexpected. What _had_ been expected
was perhaps another delivery, or he thought he had been flagged down.
"I see. Any thoughts as to when that would be?"

"Sometime this first sevenday, not on day four." He smiled. "It's not
an exact sort of thing."

"I figured that, but having an idea is good." Bridinar glanced over
toward the hold proper. "T'vanen, what, exactly, is your interest in my
daughter?"

"She's a very nice young woman," the bronzerider said calmly. "And I
enjoy her company."

"And that's all? Nothing more?" The holder quirked an eyebrow at the rider.

"Nothing right now," the younger man said levelly.

"Right now?" And what, exactly, did that mean? "But later?"

"It's hard to speak for 'later'. I like your daughter, I enjoy her
company. Where that might lead, right now I can't say. Nowhere that
would offend a father, though, or embarrass my Weyr, if that's what is
worrying you."

"I'm more worried about her being hurt." Bridinar admitted with a soft
sigh. If Briata fell in love with the bronzerider, he wouldn't keep
them apart. The thing was, he wasn't so sure she understood how things
worked at a weyr - and life with a dragonrider wasn't exactly the kind
of life he had a feeling she imagined.

"Ahh, well. That's harder to promise, because people get hurt even when
everybody is trying to avoid that, but I'll be ... careful."

After a moment of contemplation, Bridinar nodded. "She's in the
solar...or at least was a half candlemark ago."

"And can I tell her that you're happy for her to go to Dragonsfall with
me for the Hatching?" the young bronzerider asked hesitantly.

"I will allow her to go if that's what she wishes." Bridinar nodded,
though he didn't exactly feel overly confident about letting her go.
Yet, he didn't want to deny his daughter - he just didn't want her to
get into something she wasn't ready for, or didn't completely understand.

"Thank you." T'vanen nodded. "I appreciate your trust. And now I think
I'd better ask the lady concerned. Somehow I don't think she would take
kindly to me just assuming she'll join me."

That comment brought a smile that lit up Bridinar's face. "I think you
would be right about that. Although, if you ask politely, I'm sure
she'll accept the invitation."

"I hope so. I'll let you know how I get on."

"I don't think you'll have to." The holder chuckled softly. "I'm sure
she'll tell me herself."
