Good News

Writers: AL, Chelle
Date Posted: 7th October 2008

Characters: Sarban, Ketarl
Description: Sarban engages in correspondence with his brother to tell him the news.
Location: Elsewhere on Pern, Emerald Falls Hold
Date: month 12, day 5 of Turn 4

The newly made Steward sat down and began to write a letter. The letter would go by runner to his brother, who could be found in a Hold near Dolphin Cove Weyr. He thought about what he would say, then began to scrawl.

"Brother:

Cousin Corowal has invited me to become the Steward of the Hold. I have accepted and will stay here despite mother's passing. I hope all is well there. Please let me know if you need anything. Any news from our sisters?

Sincerely, Sarban"

Ketarl fingered the letter he had received, reading the words a second time. Succinct, very succinct indeed. He pursed his lips in confusion. It had been a good two turns since his mother's death, so why should that weigh in any decisions Sarban made? Ah well, he was glad that his brother seemed to be doing well and, from what little he could glean from the rather short note, happy. The beastcrafter leaned forward and took up a bit of parchment, then began to write his own letter to his brother.

"Greetings Sarban!

It is good to hear from you. I am glad that you have found yourself something to keep you busy, and I am certain you will distinguish yourself. Things are indeed well here. There are several runners that are very close to foaling so my nights have been rather restless as of late - though for good reasons. Girali and the children send you their love. Both of our sisters are doing well also.

Masa has informed me that she is expecting again. I think this will do her heart good after the loss of her last baby. Hopefully this will help mend the hurt that has been so poignant with her. Laras is working hard though she has yet to find a suitable husband. I fear our youngest will simply live to be an old maid auntie. She seems to have no qualms about this, though I am not certain whether this is a good thing or not. Life continues on as usual. Nothing out of the ordinary seems to be occurring save for my little brother working his way up in the world. I am proud of you, and I know our parents would have been proud as well.

Sincerely, Ketarl"

Upon arrival of Ketarl's reply, Sarban put his other work aside and opened the missive, devouring the words. When he was finished reading, he put his thoughts in order, then began to write once more.

"I am glad that all is well there. Someday I wish to have a family of my own, but right now it is not to be. There are more willing now however so I must pick carefully. I shall try to send some presents with this letter for the small ones. Laras has always been a strange one. She has strong character, though, and I trust her to make the right choice. Masa will be a good mother and I hope all is well this time. The healers will know to watch. Thank you for your support. Perhaps I may be able to visit someday.

Your Brother, Sarban"

~ ~ ~

Ketarl smiled as he read the reply, then set it aside. He would make his own later. For the moment, he had things to attend to. It was sad that Sarban had yet to find someone. Surely he would eventually settle down with a nice woman and raise a family. Perhaps now that he was Steward he would be in the light enough to be noticed. Perhaps. The sounds of a mare kicking at stall alerted Ketarl that he needed to make his rounds. He had a feeling that he would be welcoming at least one new foal that day. A new life. There were lots of news, lots of beginnings. Certainly this was a new beginning for Sarban.
