Characters: Sarban, Corowal
Description: Corowal invites Sarban to become Emerald Falls Hold's Steward.
Location: Emerald Falls Hold
Date: month 12, day 2 of Turn 4

Sarban looked at the message the drudge had left on his workspace. His brow raised as he set it back down again. "So I'm to dine with cousin Corowal tonight. Interesting.."

He immediately began making a mental list of the things he needed to do before evening meal and what he might wear. Grateful to Corowal for all he had done, he hoped that he hadn't overstayed his welcome since his mother had passed on.

Corowal was in a good mood as he waited for Sarban. He had invited him to dinner and had a surprise for him. He always loved surprising people, especially in a good way.

Sarban approached the dais in the Great Hall and stood waiting behind the empty seat. Despite the invitation, he wouldn't sit until the Lord Holder told him he could. Sarban had been taught manners.

"Evening Sarban. Please, take a seat. How's your day been?" Corowal greeted.

Sarban nodded then slid into the seat, getting comfortable. "The usual..spent two candlemarks this morning trying to sort out the mess with the cotholder that didn't tithe his full amount, but it's sorted now." He carefully unfolded the linen napkin and placed it on his lap. "How's your day been, Cousin?"

"The usual too. I've been negotiating with the Trader Caravan for most of the day," Corowal replied and gestured to the drudge to serve the food. "Those Traders are mean negotiators. I still don't know if we came out on top or not."

"Aye well that's how they make their living." Sarban shrugged, then began to eat. He tried to downplay his curiosity, hoping Corowal wouldn't notice how anxious he was to know why he'd been called to dinner.

"So, you haven't found a lady to grace your life yet?" Corowal asked casually.

"Ah no not yet." Sarban gave a wan smile. Most of the women at the Hold his age were already spoken for.

"Maybe, when you're wearing the steward's knots, they will be more interested in you," Corowal said, keeping his voice still casual.

Sarban opened his mouth to answer, then realized just what Corowal was saying. "Em Cousin, just what do you mean by that?" He didn't dare to hope he knew.

"It means that I'm offering you the Steward's position," Corowal said, a small smile on his lips. The look on Sarban's face was worth a mark.

"By Faranth...I..I don't know what to say, Cousin. I mean I..thank you..." He was sputtering and he knew it. He just couldn't help himself. Sarban couldn't have ever imagined being given such an opportunity. If he didn't have the seacraft training he had, he likely would have shown alot more emotion.

Corowal grinned. "Say yes," he suggested.

Sarban controlled himself long enough to nod his head. "Yes Cousin."

"Congratulations, Steward." Corowal grinned, slapped his shoulder, and poured him a generous drink. "Let's toast to your new position."

Sarban raised his glass and waited for his cousin to say what he would. No matter what, he wouldn't forget that night.
