N'vanik

N'vanik

He knocked on the Headwoman's door and, unusual for him, waited for a response instead of just walking in. If he was going to ask her a favor, it was probably a good idea to start off on the right foot.

"Come in!" Ylisahn looked up from her hidework ready to ask if it was an emergency or not since that was the rule about disturbing her while her door was closed.

N'vanik stepped in. "Afternoon, Headwoman. I'm N'vanik, the new Weyrleader." Was he ever going to get used to saying that?

Ylisahn got to her feet and put her pen down. "It's a pleasure to meet you, Weyrleader," she said with a nod of greeting and at appraising look at the young man. He didn't appear terribly confident in his new role, but perhaps the wasn't so unexpected. Apparently he hadn't held any wing rank before this promotion on the choice of their senior gold's mating flight. "Welcome to Dolphin Cove. I'm Ylisahn. Have a seat," she gestured to one of the chairs opposite the desk. "How can I help you?"

"I'd like you to find a weyr for someone," he said.

"For your family?" Ylisahn asked with a smile for her curiosity. (A perfectly natural curiosity, in her opinion.)

"Uh ... my lover."

"With a dragon? Children? Just her alone?" Ylisahn prompted. Now _that_ wasn't curiosity. She needed to know the situation to find the right accommodation.

"Alone," he said. "Get her one close to mine, if you can. And with a bath ... although she uses mine anyway," he muttered.

"The bath might be a problem. Very few of our rooms have services too them - electricity or water. We have plenty of communal pools though so nobody's far from somewhere to bathe." Ylisahn reached over for a heavy stack of hides loosely bound down one side into book-form. She rolled the two first pages back until she came to the plan of the ground-level weyrs. "There are two rooms free on that level, but they're quite small. " She flipped back one of the pages. "Or upstairs - and the stairs aren't far from the Weyrleader's rooms - there is a bigger room that might be all right."

He looked over the plan, trying to picture what it would actually look like. Closer and bigger was definitely better. "That one looks okay. Could I have her look it over just to make sure?"

"You can have her call in and I'll be happy to show her what's available," Ylisahn said amiably, "or you can take a note of these three and take her around them yourself. They'll all empty currently."

"And these are the best you have?" Tal deserved the best, especially since he was dragging her away from everything she knew.

Ylisahn eyed the new Weyrleader thoughtfully. "In that area, for a woman without a dragon or children. Of course, if your lover holds master rank in a craft then she could be accommodated in more expansive rooms in another part of the Weyr."

He sighed. "No, she's only an apprentice. Even she can't earn master's knots that fast."

"Not if she's still an apprentice. So, either show her the rooms yourself or send her along and she and I can find somewhere that she likes." Perhaps the woman wouldn't necessarily want to be limited to 'close by' if she wasn't going to share his weyr.

He didn't really have time. Everyone wanted to have meetings with him or have him fill out this or that piece of hidework, but she was only here because of him. "I'll make some time to take her around. Do you have some scrap hide I could write these down on?"

Ylisahn provided a piece of paper, rather roughly made. "Decorated stuff, from the children's classes with the printers," she explained. She extended her pen to him and pointed out the rooms on the two pages of plans.

He scribbled down the room locations. "Thanks. I'll try to get back to you in a day or two."

"I'd appreciate that," Ylisahn said easily, getting to her feet.

N'vanik tucked the scrap into his trousers. "Nice to meet you, by the way."

"And you, Weyrleader."
