The gold weyrling gave a satisfied sigh as she wiped off her hands on a rag stuffed through her belt. She had finally finished oiling Onnyth until she shone, and now the young dragon was settling to sleep.
"She is a beauty," U'kaiah commented as he and Kalamath emerged from the water. "Teseada, is it?"
"Yes sir," she replied, looking up and recognising the Wingleader.
The bronzerider smiled. He didn't stand too much on ceremony, but it was good to know the new goldrider hadn't forgotten her manners when she Impressed the most sought after prize on the Sands. "Do you mind if I take a look at her? I promise I won't wake her."
"Go ahead, I don't think anything could wake her. Once she's asleep, nothing seems to wake her, unless she's hungry."
U'kaiah crouched down next to her and ran a hand gently over her smooth hide. "She's a beautiful color, isn't she?" He glanced up at the young woman appologetically. "I'm sorry, this is my first chance to see her.
I had to miss the Hatching, unfortunately."
"I heard," she said. She'd known about the riders going to help Dolphin Cove, and the one who was lost forever. But that was about it as for the details, she didn't like to think of it too much at the moment, the thought of anything happening to Onnyth... "I almost didn't expect to impress," she said. "I was about ready to leave the weyr for the Technicians Hall proper, to see if I could walk the tables."
"I'm sure that would have made your father just as proud," U'kaiah nodded. "But it seems this little beauty knew better."
"Papa told me that she was why I had to wait so long," replied Teseada with a smile. "And now I know that the waiting was worth while."
"I could have waited turns longer if I had to before Kalamath found me.
I think they are always worth it." He smiled up at his own lifemate who turned his great head towards them and the sleeping gold.
}:Why should we wait longer? Onnyth knew hers was ready for her the same as I knew you were ready for me,:{ the bronze said matter of factly.
U'kaiah smiled and passed the piece of draconic wisdom along.
It made Teseada smile too. "That's what she told me."
"Brains and beauty," U'kaiah chuckled. "She will be a wonderful queen of Pern."
"I hope so, I just want to do her, and the Weyr proud." Suddenly Teseada felt very grown up, like she was realising all the things that riding gold meant.
The bronzerider put a reassuring hand on her shoulder. "She would not have chosen you, Teseada, if you were not capable of that."
"Thank you sir," she said, realising it was meant as a compliment.
"You don't have to call me sir. I will never be your Wingleader. You can call me U'kaiah."
"Thank you, U'kaiah," she said.
"Well, enjoy her while she's small. I remember when mine was this size." He rolled his eyes dramatically. "It didn't last long."
"I'm sure you manage to get plenty of help with washing and oiling him,"
Teseada herself had seen people doing such things, infact it was posted on the chore schedule for later on that there would be time spent assisting riders who couldn't manage for themselves.
"Well, I still enjoy doing it myself when I have the time for it, no matter how big his ugly hide is," he said with a fond look over his shoulder at his lifemate. He grinned when the bronze let out a great snort.
"He's not ugly though, he's a very good looking bronze."
Kalamath crooned at the compliment and spread his wings a bit to give her a better view. "Yes, and he knows it," the wingleader said with a wink.
"And I bet he's popular in flights." The comment just jumped to her lips, she knew full well that flights, or talk of the activity that usually accompanied them was not the sort of thing a junior weyrling should be discussing. After all, they were prohibited from having relations for a reason.
U'kaiah smiled up at his lifemate, still preening for the Weyrs newest goldrider. "He wins his fair share."
"Well maybe someday..." she said, hoping that the comments would not get repeated to the Weyrlingstaff. The bronzerider regarded her for a moment. A slight smile began to turn up the corner of his lips. "Maybe. Someday."
