Location: Emerald Falls Hold
Date: month 12, day 8 of Turn 4
Corowal looked his calender while he waited for Vanea. He had sent a drudge to fetch the Headwoman. **Had it been a whole Turn already?** A full turn and some, since had come to the Emerald Falls, a Turn during which his wife had died and he had become the Lord Holder. And now he needed to start to think about the coming Turn's End. The last Turn's celebration at the Emerald Falls hold had been rather small and subdued. This time, they should arrange something bit bigger. Maybe invite some hallmaster or other Lords.
"Lord Corowal?" Vanea stood at the door to his office, waiting. "You sent for me?"
"Yes, I did. Please take a seat. This might take a while."
Vanea kept her expression neutral, though inwardly she sighed. She had more work than she had time to complete that day and a long talk probably meant more tasks added. "Yes, my Lord." She sat on one of the chairs in front of his desk.
"As my children very cleverly reminded me this morning, by listing what they wish for Turn over presents, The Turn Over fest is fast approaching. We need to start planning for it. Last Turn's celebration was rather small thing, perhaps this time we have something bigger and showier."
"Bigger," she repeated in a monotone. "And showier." She forced a smile. "Yes, my Lord. Exactly what did you have in mind?"
"We should invite some other Lords with their families, Dolphin Cove's Weyrleaders and local Hallmasters. Of course, they have their own celebrations, so I doubt many will actually come," Corowal explained.
**We can hope that they stay home,** the Headwoman thought to herself. "In that case, we had best get moving with the invitations so that we can order supplies." She tilted her head to regard him. "The invitations should properly come from you."
"Of course. But since there's no Lady Holder, you have to plan the menu," Corowal replied. He stared at the ceiling. "You probably need more help with all of this. The Ladies Solar seems to be full of idle hands, fosterlings and suchs. Maybe you could draft them to help. It would be useful for their education, " he mused.
Just what she needed, a bunch of simpering would-be ladies who were accustomed to being idle and probably wished to stay that way. "Yes, my Lord. I'll visit there today and enlist their help." She made a note on the pad she kept in her apron pocket. "Though I should plan the menu, are there any favorites that you would care to have?"
"Seafood, but that may be hard to get and some people are allergic to it. Good old roasted herdbeast and wherry. Game if possible," Corowal knew he was being demanding. But that was to impress the possible guests.
Yes, this would definitely require some planning. "I'll check into what I can find. Anything else?"
"I'll make a request to the Hall to have some harpers to perform us, besides those already assigned to our hold," Corowal said.
"Of course." What were a few more mouths to feed in all of this? "I assume that the Steward will see to the tents for the lesser folks? And for some who will probably need to give up their rooms for your guests."
"Of course, those are his duties. I trust you and Sarban can co-ordinate where your duties overlap."
She nodded in acquiescence to that. "I'll start making my lists of what is needed and meet with him immediately."
"Good. I try to think of more entertainment besides the harper performances. Have you ever seen a puppet show?"
"Yes, but not in many turns."
"Me either. It could be fun, especially for the children. I should ask the traders if they know anyone who performs them these days."
"I'm sure many would enjoy that," she told him, relieved that this task would not fall to her. "Unusual entertainments always perk up a gather."
"So it does," Corowal agreed and wrote down a note for himself. "Anything else?"
She shook her head. "Not at the moment, but I'll let you know if I need your decisions on anything."
Corowal nodded and collected up his notes. "Well, this should keep us busy for the next two months."
"Quite busy," she agreed, though she wondered if even two months would be enough.
