"Jestyn, you awake?" Figol whispered as he turned over on his bunk. It was after lights out, but he'd been tossing and turning for awhile and was no closer to sleep.
"Yeah." Came the reply, also whispered. Jestyn lay below, listening to the creak of his friend's bed as he thrashed about. "With the noise you're making, I don't think even the dead could sleep in here."
"Sorry." the senior apprentice apologized and stuck his head over the side, just barely making out his friends form. "I've just got my song spinning around in my head. I've been working on it with Master Fursao and he wants me to sit in on the try-outs."
"Tryouts?" Something in Jestyn's fog filled mind told him he really should know what Figol was talking about. Yet, despite the fact that he hadn't slept, partially thanks to the noise from Figol, he had managed to get halfway there, and he wasn't exactly completely awake either.
"For all four parts." Figol explained. "The drums won't be a big deal, it's not a complicated part, anyone who is steady should do. Vocals could be hard to pick, but it's got a bit of range so that might weed some out. The two gitar parts though are what's getting me. I kind of don't want to try myself out. Fursao says I would probably play it better than anyone because it's my own piece, but I don't want to mess it up either."
"So...why are we talking about this?" Jestyn had half a mind to simply take his pillow and put it over his head in an attempt to drown out Figol's talking.
Figol groaned, "Because I can't sleep!"
"Maybe you could sleep if you didn't talk." Jestyn suggested as he turned over onto his left side. "Talking isn't conducive to sleep."
"Fine, you sleep, and I'll just lay here all night in agony!" Figol muttered as he flopped back face first onto his mat.
"If you do, just be quiet about it." Jestyn muttered as he let his eyes drift shut. He really hoped Figol wouldn't toss and turn all night. They both needed sleep!
He laid with his face in his pillow trying to slow his breathing and will himself to sleep. After an indeterminate amount of time Figol finally gave up. He leaned over the side of the bunk again, "Want to go for a walk?"
So close, yet so far. Once again Jestyn was jerked out of his half slumber and he stuttered for a moment before managing to get out, "What?"
"Let's go for a walk." Figol whispered, "No one will catch us, it's the middle of the night."
"Precisely why we shouldn't be walking." Jestyn mumbled, irritated. "We should be sleeping."
"But I _can't_ sleep, I've got too much in my mind!" he cried, "Maybe a walk will tire me out."
"Then why don't you take one without me?" Jestyn suggested. It would be a lot quieter and maybe he could at least get some sleep.
Figol rolled off the bunk, letting his feet hit the floor with hardly a sound. He kneeled down besides Jestyn's head as he slid his boots on and scowled, "Some friend you are."
"Look who's talking." Jestyn muttered back and turned over. Let the boy take his walk. He was going to get his sleep.
