"Bweeeeee! Bweeeee!" The toddler calling out the name as best he
could ran over toward Briata. He stumbled, fell, but picked himself
right back up without so much as shedding a tear and made the rest of
the way over to his goal. Briata immediately scooped him up and blew
against his tummy. The sound created wasn't really polite or feminine,
but the toddler didn't care. He laughed, evidently finding it
hilarious.
"You're good with them, aren't you?" Ishek asked, not able to help the
chuckle as he saw the young boy heading for Briata and the deft way she
handled them. "He certainly seems to like you."
"This is Besten." Briata placed the young boy upon her hip and grinned
over at Ishek, eyes shining. "I love children. Adore them really.
I'm looking forward to having some of my own. In the meantime, Besten
is a good substitute."
"Does liking them mean you help in the creche a lot?"
"Oh yes." Briata nodded, "Even if they don't really need me, I enjoy
being around the children. What about you? Do you like children?"
"I do." Ishek agreed. "I must admit, I spoil Miralani's children
whenever I see them. They're my favorite nieces. Having a son or
daughter of my own would be lovely, though I've only had experiences
with girls." he admitted.
"Boys tend to be more..." Briata paused, trying to think of the
correct word, then chuckled. "Boyish. A little more rough around the
edges, I suppose."
"Less prone to listening to their parents, more likely to rebel..."
Although perhaps it had just been him. "Unless that's all of them once
they're older."
"Actually, it depends on the child." Briata placed a kiss upon
Besten's cheek, then whispered something in his ear. She set him on
the ground and he ran off back to the other children, squealing
happily. "Some I have seen were troublemakers only to become more
reserved as they grew others. Then I've seen the opposite happen as
well in the children I've watched here in the hold."
"Do you think it's natural temper, or is it more how the parents raise
them?"
"I think it's a combination of both." Briata admitted, "I mean, I've
heard my mother and father talk about how so and so's son or daughter
was raised properly, but that person turned out to be no good. Yet,
I've also heard talk of how another person was thought as a child to
be a troublemaker, but became a respected crafter or dragonrider."
"You're a natural with them, and you're kind enough that I'm sure your children will have the best of both." he assured her.
"I hope so." Briata laughed lightly. "I guess we'll just have to wait and see, won't we?"
We'll see, she'd said. He wondered if he'd ever see her children- they'd been seeing each other lately because of how he'd been trying to improve relations with Onyx Peak, but that wasn't going to last forever; he couldn't be favoring one hold over another, even if this one did produce many valuables. It depended on who she was married to, he assumed. "Well, I hope I'll get to see them." he agreed.
"Once again, we'll simply have to wait and see." The girl shrugged, then took Ishek's hand and tugged at him. "Come on, let's go meet some of the other children. Then you can spoil them while you're here."
"I like that idea." Ishek agreed.
"Good." The girl let her arm slide and link with Ishek's.
