Not a Homemaker

Writers: Noli
Date Posted: 23rd November 2008

Characters: Tokallya
Description: Tokallya is finally fed up with settling for a second-class position in life.
Location: River Bluff Weyr
Date: month 13, day 11 of Turn 4
Notes: Mentor Approved

Tokallya let out a frustrated sigh as she inspected
her project with a critical eye. Not for the first time, she
contemplated grinding it under her boot heel; the idea gave
her a pleasurable shiver. Instead she pushed the hair back
from her face and rethreaded the needle. This sock wasn't
going to mend itself, after all.

In the almost two Turns that she'd been at River
Bluff Weyr, Kallya had never felt a moment of homesickness.
Strangely, though, this sewing task brought it in huge
waves. Tokallya longed for her mother. The woman, though
largely a model of everything that her daughter did NOT want
to be, would be a fortifying force right now. Kallya
despised these homemaker duties- sewing, cleaning, cooking,
ect. Her mother had understood this. She had often interspersed
the necessary lessons with breaks, even finishing a particularly
difficult job for her frustrated student on occasion. In doing her
best to tame her daughter without breaking her, Maralla had earned
a grudging respect and admiration. And so, Tokallya missed her.

Standing up and casually tossing the repaired stocking into a bin,
she idly wondered what she should do now. She had no responsibilities.
This rankled on the driven Tokallya. She had come to the Weyr to find
fulfillment; instead, she was often bored out of her intelligent mind.
Briefly a Smith apprentice in an era of unusual freedoms, she was
hardly able to cope with the sedentary lifestyle that she was trapped
in. Oh, she had chores- everyone at the Weyr did- but the simplicity of
them drove her mad. She wanted to DO something.

Her mind made up, she set of to find the Weyr's
Master Smith.
