"Oh look at this one!" Karri exclaimed as she held out a blue high waisted dress for her friend to see. "It even comes with this cute cap."
"I like that, but it suits you far better than me." Teseada said after a moment or two. "I think it might make me look fat."
The greenrider pursed her lips as she looked at the dress again. She'd put on a a bit of weight since coming to the Weyr, she blamed the sweets, and while it didn't really show in her riding gear, she didn't want to accentuate it in an expensive dress. She put it back. "I'll think about it."
"No, I like that one for you, on the other hand," Teseada pointed to a long black skirt, with embroidery around the hem and waist in what looked like the colours for Dragonsfall. "What do you think of that?"
Karri let the fabric run between her fingers for a moment. It was softer than what she normally wore. "It's lovely. I can never keep clean enough to wear black though, it shows every dirt and dust smudge."
"What about on me? Perhaps with a plain bodice and if I can find a necklace?"
"Definitely." Karri agreed with a grin. "I saw a perfect necklace for it too, with polished black stones. Why don't you get the skirt and we can go look at it."
"That sounds an idea." The goldrider reached down to her belt pouch, "I hope I've enough marks here," she said pulling out a handful of pieces.
"Well, the necklace will be a Turn's End present from me, so don't factor that in." It was more than what she'd normally think to spend on a Turn's End gift, but Teseada was her best friend, and she did have a hand in getting her all the marks she'd won.
"Are you sure?" Teseada looked up from counting out the wooden marks, for some reason she seemed to have nothing but 32nd mark pieces.
Karri smiled, "I'm sure. I want to _spend_ my marks remember!"
"So you keep telling me!" Teseada grinned. "There, that one's a half mark, so I have enough for the skirt."
Karri went back to the blue dress and picked it back up. "And I'll take the dress." Maybe it would encourage her to lay off the sweets till Turn's End.
The merchant gave her an odd look as she paid with two whole mark pieces, but he didn't verbalize his thoughts so she let it slip her mind as they left the store. Karri and Teseada were able to trace their steps back to the shop without any problems and easily found the necklace Karri had remembered. "Here it is. I know it's not as fancy as some of the others, but I think it would suit you."
"I like that, it'd set my new skirt off nicely," said Teseada as she leaned over to take a better look. "That colour there matches the embroidery, see."
"Back again girls?" a low voice interrupted them.
Karri looked up to see the merchant frowning down at them. "Yes, we were looking at that necklace there to see if she wanted it."
He almost sneered at the two plain looking girls. He'd seen the type often enough hovering around his front. He didn't mind them peeking around because he had several flawed or apprentice made items that they could sometimes afford for half a mark or less. These two were looking at a journeyman's necklace, so they were either wasting his time or planning to steal it; neither of which he would tolerate. He eyed the supposed buyer, "Let me see your marks then."
Teseada didn't care for the way he spoke to her and Karri, if he knew who she was... "We have the marks," she settled for saying. "You can ask the last merchant we visited. He'd not have sold us these otherwise."
Karri'd been half way to showing her marks like she'd been told, but Teseada's strength gave her pause. "If we decide to buy it you can see them."
"Get out of here." he growled, impertinence from drudges he would not tolerate. "If you come this way again I'll call for a guard."
"I beg your pardon? Do you know who I am? Who we are?" began Teseada as she reached out mentally to Onnyth. "You don't talk to us like that."
"Teseada, come on, let's get out of here." Karri tugged on her arm, "I wouldn't buy from him now if he was the last merchant on all Pern."
"Yeah, you're right. Maybe we can find something nicer elsewhere."
They escaped without further incident, but Karri was left unsettled. Coming without knots had seemed like a good way of avoiding unwanted attention, but it seemed to have quite the unintended consequence.
