Description: Fieayz and her gold flit make a good impression on an apprentice
Location: Smith Hall (NPC)
Date: month 8, day 14 of Turn 3
Fieayz was feeding her flit when she noticed a youn apprentice near by.
"Hi!" she called out, tossing the gold another piece of meat, which was rapidly devoured.
"Hello," Nyblek smiled shyly. He had been watching the young woman and her flit, surprised to see a _gold_. There were several flits around the Hold and Hall, of course, but gold flits were rare, and he had enjoyed watching how the light played off her hide. **Just like _real_
gold** he had thought.
"This is Arva, and I'm Fieayz," she said by way of introduction.
"I'm Nyblek. I live here. Um... I'm an apprentice." The boy had lots of sisters, but he was pretty much a stranger to conversing with girls he didn't know. He didn't have much contact with the girls in the Hall.
The boys who did often got teased and called a sissy, and he had a reputation to defend. But her flit was so beautiful, and he was drawn to beautiful things.
"Well met Nyblek," she said a little formally, before lapsing into a grin. "Got a flit yourself?"
"No I don't," he replied simply, watching the young girl toss another chunck of meat to the gold. "But she's very beautiful. Your flit I mean."
"She is, and she knows it," replied Fieayz. "And an attention seeker.
Feed her and she'll follow you around for a while, asking for more."
"Really?" he chuckled, half hoping she'd offer him a chance to try. He would love to have the little gold follow him around a bit. Maybe that would give him time to sketch her.
"Here, want to try?" she offered the bowl of scraps his way. "Just take a small piece, and toss it gently in her direction."
The apprentice couldn't keep his eyes off of Arva as he reached for the bowl. Much to his horror, his hand didn't make it to the inside of the bowl, but rather batted the boy from the young girls hands. He watched in embarrassed horror as scraps of meat went flying. "Oh shards, I'm sorry!"
Fieayz couldn't resist a laugh at Nyblek's face. You'd have thought the Hallmaster himself had caught him up to no good. "It's okay," she said.
"See, Arva's found the food anyway." The gold was making the most of the scattered meat, before coming close and chittering at them, as though scolding them for letting the meat end up on the floor.
"Yes, but..." He felt even more embarrassed that she found it so funny.
"I didn't mean for that to happen."
"I know," she said softly. Then brightening a bit, and changing the subject, she said, "She'll rise again soon, maybe I could get you an egg?"
Nyblek smiled hopefully. "Really? You could do that?" He smiled at the thought of a flit of his very own. Especially a gold or bronze one.
"Will you have many eggs?"
"There were seven last time, but it was her first flight. I'm not sure how many there will be now. Maybe twice that perhaps?" The trruth was she really didn't know how many eggs Arva would clutch. When she impressed her, the weyrfolk had told her that it depended a little on what colour won the flight and the age of the flit.
"So she rose to mate before? That must have been an interesting experience." The question was out before he had thought about it. He mentally kicked himself for asking such a personal question. Nyblek knew what people said to happened when a person's flit rose - the feelings they could feel. What a stupid thing to ask! He tried to cover it quickly. "I... I saw a green mating flight once. The flits were really beautiful flying around like that." **Stop talking Nyblek!
Just stop talking!**
"It was..." she paused trying to think of the words. "Pleasant. Very pleasant."
"Really?" he asked, slightly embarrassed, but deeply interested. She didn't seem to mind answering, after all. "Do you feel _everything_
they feel?" he asked tentatively.
"Pretty much, but it's like you are aware of it, but don't need to do anything about it, like you are watching right next to them."
Nyblek considered that a moment, being aware of what was happening during a flight, aware of their feelings as they... Ok, he wouldn't think about that any more. "Do you feel it when she lays the clutch?"
"Just how proud of herself she was. She wouldn't let me close at first, but then when I did, oh, it was amazing. She was so happy."
He smiled as he thought of what seven perfect eggs would look like.
Like jewels next to her golden hide? "I bet you were proud of her. For making something so beautiful, I mean."
"I was, and one day soon, she'll do it again."
"Will you sell the eggs?"
That thought hadn't crossed her mind, but it might be a way to make a few quick marks. "I hadn't really thought about it. Last time, I just told Papa and he sorted it all out."
"Well, if I can get enough marks, do you think I could buy an egg?"
Nyblek asked hopefully. He had never thought about having a flit of his own before, but then again he never knew someone with a gold flit of their own.
"I'm sure you could, but I might not sell them though," she didn't want to raise his hopes too much. The Hallmaster might want to take charge as her father had.
"I see," Nyblek replied, trying to keep the disappointment from his voice. After all, she didn't say she _wouldn't_ sell them. There was still a chance...
"Wait and see what happens when she rises."
"Will you tell me? After she rises, I mean."
"I'll make sure I do," she said with a grin, feeling a sudeen liking for the young apprentice.
Nyblek decided the girl's smile was almost as beautiful as her gold flit.
