Getting to the Good Part

Writers: Eimi, Emma
Date Posted: 30th November 2008

Characters: Hanni, U'kaiah
Description: 'kaiah finds an old friend to take this mind off the fact that he was alone on a restday
Location: Dragonsfall Weyr
Date: month 12, day 14 of Turn 4

It was a rest day. He should be in Dolphin Cove, or entertaining a
guest in his Weyr. But instead he found himself absolutely free, which
was a dangerous thing. He had gone to his waterball practice, and that
had taken his mind off her for a while, but when he returned to his
room, it was too quiet and too easy to wonder just how Trae was spending
her rest day without him. Probably by entertaining company of her own.

He had retreated back into his room, pulled out his gitar and tried to
run through a few warm-ups, but his eyes were drawn to the name etched
into the old instrument he had played since he was an apprentice.
"Uzrakaiah". The bronzerider could remember clearly when Trae ran her
finger along that old carving, the way she had caressed his callouses
and then lifted his hand to her lips. He could still hear the way she
had purred that name, and how it had left him completely undone. That
was the night they had moved beyond friendship and into being lovers.

But she had not just been any lover. U'kaiah had fallen in love.
Shards,
he had probably been in love with her for a longer than that, but it was
the first moment he had allowed himself to bring those feelings to the
surface. He had fallen in love with Trae. But she had fallen for
another.

The thought made his head spin. He wanted to deny it, yet he couldn't.
He wanted to rush out to Dolphin Cove and rip her out of that flaming
brownrider's arms, but he shouldn't. He wanted to beg her to tell him
that she had fallen in love with him too, even just the slightest bit,
but he wouldn't. Alone in his rooms he could feel his heart being
ripped apart by rage, jealousy, despair, loneliness. This was why he
had avoided love. Syntara had shattered his heart, and he thought he
had learned his lesson. But then Jaela had come along and he couldn't
help himself. When she died, he felt his heart break again, but Trae
had been there to help him pick up the pieces and make him feel whole
once more.

And now who was there to save him? He was alone. No one would be there
to rescue him this time.

But he could think of plenty of people who could at least help him
pretend, even if just for a few candlemarks. There were plenty of
casual lovers who could sooth his bruised ego, bolster his wounded
pride. They couldn't touch his heart, but they could make him believe,
even if just for a little while, that he didn't need her, he didn't
really miss her, and that life would go on as it did before.

Without a destination he wandered the halls, looking for a familiar
face. Any one really would do. Finally he watched as a young woman
with long blonde hair and swaying hips turned into the corridor and was
walking his way.

"Hanni," he said, mustering his cockiest bronzerider smile. "It's been
a while. Have you been hiding from me on purpose?" It was almost
frightening how easily those flirtateous words had flowed from his lips.

"Now why would I want to do that?"

"I don't know. Perhaps you just don't like me anymore," he said with a
casual shrug.

"Awww, what would make you think that?" She took a step closer, looking
up into his eyes. "I don't think I could just decide not to like someone
anymore."

U'kaiah could feel his tension ease as his body responded to the look in
her eye. Thank Faranth he was feeling genuine interest in the girl. He
would feel lower than a tunnel snake's belly if he were to just use any
body that was willing. "So you do like me?" he asked, a smile twitching
at the corner of his lips.

Hanni raised her hand and trailed her fingers down U'kaiah's chest.
"Want me to show you?"

"Right here," he nodded with a challenging smile.

The greenrider took a step closer, and lifted her lips to meet his in a
kiss.

Shards, it was good to know _someone_ had missed him, the bronzerider
thought as the kiss stretched on and on until they both pulled away
breathless. "Where are you going now?"

"With you, if that's what you want," Hanni said. It had been a long
time. "We could renew our acquaintance, and I could show you just how
much I do like you."

"Well, I'll tell you a secret," he smiled, leaning down to murmur in the
greenrider's ear. "I've kind of missed you too." Although he didn't
realize it until just this moment.

"Lead on bronzerider," she said looping her arm through his. "Lets get
to the good part."
