Lost?

Writers: AmajoS, Jane
Date Posted: 31st August 2007

Characters: Tey, Benna, Lhara
Description: Tey and Lhara find Benna wandering around and help her out.
Location: River Bluff Weyr
Date: month 5, day 7 of Turn 4

Rain had driven the sisters into the corridors as they trekked from one side of the Weyr to the other visiting family who were - in their opinion - too lazy to gather in some convenient place.

Benna huffed in frustration as she turned yet another corner. Another sharding corner. How many corridors could one place have, honestly? The girl had decided to go exploring, having discovered some free time after her whirlwind introduction to the Weyr. Of course, she'd gotten hopelessly lost.

"Are you ... Lost? Perhaps?" Tey asked with a grin for the young woman. There was something in the other's expression that suggested that she wasn't certain of her whereabouts and Tey was always willing to help.

"Extremely lost!" Benna replied with a happy grin, her frustrated temper completely swept aside by a rush of relief. She should have known eventually someone would come along! "Just how big -is- this place?"

"Well big enough for three-hundred and something dragons and their riders, and all the support staff. Perhaps eight hundred people all spread out in rooms cut into the sea cliff and the river cliff," Tey informed her cheerfully. "Did you really want to know that?"

Benna laughed, "Well, I did ask. Though it kind of dims my hopes of ever actually learning my way around."

"Well, we haven't heard of anybody getting lost for any _significant_ amount of time," Lhara added. "Not longer than they could survive without food or water."

"That does set my mind at ease anyway," Benna grinned. "I'm Benna, by the way."

"Tey, and this is my sister, Lhara," Tey said, extending her hand to the other young woman. "Let me guess ... You're not from around here. Just Searched?"

"A couple of sevendays ago, yes," Benna answered. "Kind of obvious, huh?"

"It's why most people of our age turn up here," Lhara said. "Tell us where you're heading so we can put you in the right corridor."

"Well, honestly, I started out just exploring. Trying to learn my way about," Benna explained. "But now, I'd love to get to the Dining Caverns." It had been a while since breakfast and wandering aimlessly built up a fairly impressive appetite.

"Oh? You're not even on the right level," Lhara said, amused. "Come on, let's at least get you down at ground level."

"Shells, I really did get turned around, didn't I?" Benna laughed. She could've sworn she'd gone down just as many times as she'd gone up!

"Not all the levels are level. Really the corridors are just to link up the naturally occurring weyrs - and the ones that were man-made. It's not about ease of navigation, sadly."

"Guess not. Ah well, I didn't see too many other people wandering around like blind wherries so I suppose I'll learn my way around eventually. Which way is down then?" Benna grinned.

"Just step off one of those weyr ledges and you'll find that out the hard way," Tey said with a laugh. "Look, come this way and we'll set you right. Mostly, though, the best way is to find the closest set of stairs to your destination on the _ground_ level, then climb as many flights as you need. Don't try to climb and then cross the Weyr. The ground level is fairly predictable."

"Thanks," Benna smiled. "That's good to know. Though I'll keep that advice about getting down from a weyr ledge in mind. Might come in handy if I'm still getting lost after I've Impressed and all."

"If you've Impressed you'll be stuck out in the Weyrling Barracks in the Bowl. No chance of getting lost then."

"Well, there you go. I simply must Impress to be protected from my own bad sense of direction." Benna laughed.

"That's one of the best reasons I've ever heard out of a newly Searched Candidate," Tey said, laughing along with the other young woman. "I'll have to remember that."
