"Ishek?" Briata rapped lightly upon the door to the Lord's office and,
once she heard him speak, entered. She smiled as she passed through
the door, easing it almost closed, but leaving a bit of a crack. Over
one arm she had a basket, the handle of which was covered by a folded
blanket. She glanced down at the work upon his desk, then let her gaze
flicker back to his face. "I'm afraid you're going to have to put
those aside for a while, for I am kidnapping you."
"You are?" he asked, smiling at the lively girl. "That doesn't sound too
bad to me." He looked at his hides, briefly sorted them, and then
placed them aside. He scribbled a quick note to Penryn and placed it
atop one stack before looking up. "Well, now that I've informed them
I'm going to be temporarily unavailable, we can go." he said, standing
to join her.
"Oh good. I was afraid I was going to have a fight on my hands." The
girl reopened the door and motioned for Ishek to stand and follow. "I
was prepared to knock you senseless and drag you out if necessary."
Ishek laughed, following her. "You've never seen me get up and go runner
riding, leaving my work behind and Penryn wondering where I've gone.
The first few months I was a little irresponsible."
"Oh, really?" Briata couldn't help but laugh. "I find that hard to
imagine, but I suppose I shouldn't encourage such things,
hm? Welll...maybe just once a sevenday."
"I hated it here." Ishek admitted. "You may have noticed that Garnet
Valley is much like a northern hold in its stone construction- but I
don't know if you've been north?" he asked. "My brother's hold is more
traditionally Southern. I used to feel so cramped, and I would take any
excuse to get outside."
"No, I've never been North though my father has said he would take my
brothers and me some day. Of course, something always gets in the way,
but that's life." The girl shrugged, her step light and quick, "I
think I would prefer to be outside myself, especially on a day like
today!"
"I could take you if you want. We could arrange a rider convoy. We have
those privileges, as Lord and Lady."
"A rider convoy? Really?" It was tempting, very tempting. "Perhaps I
shall take you up on that after the wedding." Briata grinned
broadly. "I'd love to see what the North is like!"
"I've never been either, so we can explore together." It would be nice
to discover new firsts with Bri.
"Perhaps after the wedding." Briata suggested, though she wondered how
likely that would be. Onyx Peak was busier at certain points of the
year, though not usually so after Turn's Beginning. She wasn't sure
Garnet Valley's schedule followed a similar course, however. "Is there
anywhere in the North you would like to visit in particular?"
Ishek thought about it. "I'd love to see Ista. I've heard that the
beaches are made of black sand. It would be interesting. I've only seen
a beach once." he added wistfully.
"I've never seen a beach. At least, not a seashore." There was a lake
not too far from her hold, small as it was. More of a pond really, but
she didn't think that count. "I wonder what it's like. You said the
buildings are different up there? More like Garnet Valley's
structuring?"
"They are. Made of stone and built into cliffs and rock formations,
rather than freestanding like many other holds."
"That would be interesting to see." Her little hold wasn't anything
like that. "I wonder why the change coming down here."
"Well, the South was settled during the most recent Long Interval. Also,
the North is a lot rockier and it makes sense to build settlements in
areas Thread can't burn. Down here there aren't as many rocky areas,
there's different materials and more open space to take advantage of,
and for a long time no one worried about Threadproofing. I would be
interesting to find out more." he mused.
"That does make sense." Briata nodded. She had ever really thought
about when the South had been settled, though some of her old harper
lessons tickled at the back of her mind. She _should_ have known, but
like a dunce she hadn't given that bit of history much
thought. "Perhaps both of us should learn more about it, hm?"
