Characters: Daynar, Oresthon
Description: Oresthon arrives to the smith Craft hall and Daynar accepts him as an aprentice.
Location: Smith Hall (NPC)
Date: month 13, day 1 of Turn 4
Notes: Oresthon's intro.
Oresthon and his father, Oreson, had been sitting quite a while
outside the Hallmaster's office, waiting for their appointment.
Oresthon sat in slumped position, watching the passing people
curiously. The journey from Woodland Hold to here Garnet Valley had
been long, but Oresthon had enjoyed it, especially the riverboat. This
was his first time outside his native hold and he couldn't wait to
explore. But first they had to get thru formalities, like had Oresthon
accepted as an apprentice to the Hall. Deep down Oresthon hoped he
would not be admitted in.
Daynar called them in happily, inviting them to sit in front of his
desk. "Good day, Oreson! This must be your son that you've told me so
much about in your letters." He turned his smile to Oresthon. "So,
you'd like to be a Smith like your father, hmm?"
Oresthon mumbled something indistinct.
"He's bit shy, Hallmaster," Oreson said apologetically.
Oresthon wasn't exactly shy, he just found it hard to speak his mind
in front of authority. He also didn't want to lie directly to the
Hallmaster. He certainly did _NOT_ want to be a smith.
Daynar frowned briefly, but didn't think much of it. Many young boys
came here with alot of uncertainity, but he always taught them to be
sure of themselves somewhere in their turns of study.
Oresthon's family, though, was full of very prominent Smiths. There
was no way he wouldn't allow the boy to study!
"We'll work around that shyness in time, Oreson. What does he like
to do? I'll ask you since he appears to be not talking to me, hmm?"
"He does spend awfully lot of time his nose buried in books," Oreson
sounded apoletically.
Daynar's first frown appeared. Books were good, and he would be
studying alot as an apprentice, but he would eventually have to move
past that into working with something. But that was turns away, so
Daynar's frown lifted.
"Books are good. He will need to study hard to become a good Smith.
Oresthon, lad, would you like to see the records room? Its got lots of
hides and books in it. You could read whatever you liked in there."
"Really? Thank you, sir," Oresthon perked up a bit. He did love books,
even smithcraft books. Music he loved even more.
"Absolutely!" Daynar was pleased at the lad's new interest in the
Smithhall, and shared a smile with his father. "This way then, I'll
show you myself?" He got up to lead them out the door and down the
hallway a bit to the records room.
Oresthon and his father followed him."I believe you were apprenticed
together with my father, Orelim?" Oreson asked.
When he opened the door to the records room, he waved Oresthon to a
comfortable looking chair next to a table piled high with hides and
books. Then he turned back to Oreson, searching his memory. "Ah!
yes., Orelim. We apprenticed together, and then he took to the road
once we made Journeyman and I stayed close to here. How is he doing,
then?"
"He's fine. He settled to Woodlands hold fourty turns ago and has
stayed there since, happily married to my mother," Oreson told him.
Oresthon rolled his eyes.
Daynar chuckled dryly. "Happily married, hmm? He married for love.
I suppose some people still do that.... " He shook his head and
considered his own wife. He certainly _liked_ her. But he had not
married her for _love_. The very thought!
"So lad.. " Daynar addressed the question to Oresthon. "Find anything
you liked yet?"
"I don't know," Oresthon replied, wandering among the shelves. Then
his eyes fell on one manual. It was actually sort of cross-craft,
intructions how to manufacture parts that harper's needed for their
musical instruments. He picked it up. It was really bit too advanced
for him, meant for journeymen.
Daynar watched him for a moment, and found he was pleased with the
choice. He didn't have any journeyment specializing in small
instruments, which was what the Harpers usually needed.
"Keep looking, lad." He smiled indulgently then turned back to
Oresthon. "He can start immediately, Oresthon. I have no need of
knowing anything but the long line of successful Smiths he is heir
too."
"Thank you, Daynar," Oreson said. "I'm positive he will do just fine here."
"I know he will! How could he not with his family history? Right
Oresthon? You'll be another great Smith, just like your father, and
his father, and his father." He smiled again, always glad to have
more young men to add to his care and training.
Oresthon felt like throwing up.
Daynar had no idea of the reaction his announcement had caused.
Instead he extended his hand to Oresthon's father. "I'll be glad to
have him."
