Shape Up, Or Else

Writers: Emma, Yvonne
Date Posted: 8th December 2008

Characters: J'nus, D'nev
Description: D'nev's distraction is affecting his drills
Location: Dragonsfall Weyr
Date: month 12, day 25 of Turn 4

The bluerider knew that last part of the drill had not been right, and he
knew that Shoglenth knew that as well. To be fair, he was somewhat
preoccupied dealing with the sudden coming together of members of his two
families. It hadn't been meant to happen lie that. if only J'nev had waited
a few more sevendays, and he'd have been able to take him to Dolphin Cove,
not have the messy business of him meeting his half sister at the Hatching
Feast...

J'nus and Kopth watched as the Wing scattered at the end of drills, and each
dragon and rider pair headed back to their own weyr for a bath or to the
Weyrlake to bathe their dragon. **Have Shoglenth send D'nev to my office
after he's taken care of his blue,** J'nus told his bronze, and Kopth
dutifully relayed the message before they followed suit. One of the perks to
being a bronzerider was a bathing pool in one's own weyr, and although it
was smaller than most since he'd declined to move after his promotion to
Wingsecond, J'nus was still able to beat the bluerider to his office. When
D'nev knocked, J'nus invited him in and bade him sit down. "Is everything
all right? You've been off in your drills for the past few days, and it's
not like you."

"Sir," D'nev took the seat. "I'm sorry Sir, there have been some rather
personal matters on my mind."

"Not at all." J'nus sat quietly for a moment, studying the bluerider. He did
look tired. "The only thing I'm worried about is you, next Threadfall. I'm
not sure if I want to send you out there if you cannot concentrate."

"I'll be fine Sir," D'nev hoped that sounded more confident than he thought
it did. "I'm dealing with the situation." Maybe the Wingsecond was just
being polite, by now the gossip had to be around the whole Weyr, stories
like this were usually quite quick to spread.

"Well, we'll see. If your performance doesn't improve by next Threadfall,
I'm going to recommend to D'wrayt that you're grounded." The bronzerider
frowned. "Do you... need some time off?"

"No Sir," came the fairly quick, perhaps too quick reply.

J'nus was silent for a moment. His thumb idly found the now-smooth brand on
the inside of his wrist as he regarded the bluerider across the desk. It was
never his intention to try to be a confidant or to pry- far be it for him to
pry in another man's life!- but it was always a delicate line to walk when
you wore ranking shoulder knots. "The option stands. All you need to do is
ask, D'nev. I'd prefer to have you in the air myself, but if your personal
issues continue to affect your flying, I will intervene."

"I understand Sir."

"How are you doing otherwise? How do you think the Wing is doing?"

"I think we're doing well, we've not had any major injuries in a while and
my wingmates are looking forwards to Turn's End."

That wasn't quite what he had been driving at, but D'nev was apparently not
feeling terribly forthcoming. "Good. All right then. If there's nothing
else, then, you can go. Just tighten up your performance for tomorrow, all
right?"

"Sir," D'nev got to his feet, relief on his face.

"Enjoy your evening," The bronzerider said, and then watched quietly as his
Wingrider left the room. Personal difficulties remained personal only if you
didn't allow them to affect your public life - and the safety of those
around you. D'nev had his warning; hopefully he'd mend his issues with
Teseada and J'nev. If not... he and D'wrayt would have something to talk
about.
