Location: Dragonsfall Weyr
Date: month 13, day 29 of Turn 4
Y'nub twirled his partner across the dance floor wishing the harpers
would finish the song quickly. He'd asked the girl to dance because she
was pretty, but she couldn't keep in step, and he was ready to lose her.
As he turned her like the dance indicated he noticed another girl
dancing with an almost equally horrible dancer. She looked familiar,
but he couldn't place her; maybe from a flight, or they could have
possibly been in the same wing for awhile. Either way, she was as good
an excuse as any go be rid of his current partner, and when the music
ended he excused himself as he'd promised an old friend a dance.
"Do you mind if I cut in?" he asked, looking from the girl to her
partner.
"Actually," the greenrider smiled with relief, turning to her
overly-enthusiastic partner, "I believe this dance was finished. C'cog,
thank you," she said shaking the young brownrider's hand. "It was
memorable to say the least." Turning back to her rescuer she took his
arm. "Shall we?"
He took her out to the center where the more adventurous dancers were,
and took her in his arms as the harpers began again. "I don't mean to
sound rude, but do we know eachother? You look familiar but I can't
place you."
Gilsha threw her head back and laughed. "Well, bronzerider, I certainly
hope your dancing is more original than your pick-up lines."
"It wasn't so much a pick up line as it was a check to make sure you
weren't some jaded lover I'd forgotten about." He said as both fact and
for humor.
"And who is to say that I wouldn't have left _you_ jaded?" she asked,
her eyebrows raised curiously. Honestly, did men always think that they
were _that_ memorable?
Y'nub's eyes darkened as he twirled her then lifted her from one side to
the other before moving with the group in a circular parade. "Because
then I would have remembered you."
"Well, that's true," she conceded. "Unless you blocked that painful
memory."
"Are you from the North perhaps?" he asked, hoping to refocus the
conversation away from himself.
"No, though I did spend some time in the North."
Perhaps that was it then. "But you don't remember me?" Bronzeriders
were usually more recognizable than a random greenrider. "Any place in
particular?"
"Nowhere in particular. Wherever the winds blew me, really. So it's
possible I suppose that if you're from the North you might have seen me
at _some_ point, but your face isn't familiar." She had met so many
people in the North, only a handful had been memorable in comparison.
He supposed she could be right, but after another few cycles around the
floor, he knew it just didn't set right. He knew her from _somewhere_ ,
and his instincts were telling him it was more than casually. "A name
then perhaps? Maybe that will jog the memory."
"Do you mean _my_ name or will any old name do?" she asked with
amusement.
Y'nub sighed, coy never played well with him. "The name you answer to."
"That name would be Gilsha," she replied, not phased by his annoyance
one bit.
That name didn't jar his memory, and he decided that without some other
clue she wasn't worth the effort anymore. They did a few more turns
around the floor, but it was just as filler until the music ended.
"Thank you for the dance."
"Thank you for the dance, bronzerider. You are a fine partner," she
smiled as they clapped for the Harpers. "Oh, and I think I know where
you know me from."
He hid the seething annoyance he felt towards her for making him try and
guess this whole time with a smile. "Oh really? And where might it be
from?"
She pointed at the knots on his shoulder, apparently oblivious to his
frustration. "You're in Cyan Wing. So am I. We probably just look
different not wearing our riding gear."
"That and I just moved over to this wing after N'jalek got scored."
He'd been in the wing less than a month so it _could_ explain the
familiarity; but it just didn't ring true. He knew this girl, and it
felt old to him, meaning up North. Still, he'd decided she wasn't worth
the effort and this new information didn't change that decision.
"And I've only been in the Weyr a turn, so there you go. Mystery
solved. Well," she said reaching out her hand to him in a polite
gesture, "thank you again for the dance, and I'm sure I'll recognize you
next time I see you in drills."
Y'nub took the hand and gave it a quick shake. He'd lost interest in
dancing and companionship for the evening. "I'm sure... Gilsha."
