"Good afternoon weyrling weyrwoman," the bronzerider said when his lifemate stopped to inspect the tiny gold dragon as she was bathed in the shallows of the lake. "She's growing well."

It was a flattery that always pleased weyrlings - it had done so when it had been voiced around him and he had been old for a weyrling, and ought to have been more of a realist - and in this case it was true. The young dragon had made the most of her eight days out of the egg and was filling out as well as gaining height.

"Yes, she is." Meledei agreed. Elleth was still small for a gold, but she was indeed growing. There was definitely a difference between her size now and the size she had been when she had hatched just over a sevenday ago. Was it only that long? It had seemed longer to Meledei...yet not long enough. Meledei lifted her eyes to let them fall upon the bronzerider who approached. He looked familiar, but no name came to mind.

"That's Loeth, in case he hasn't introduced himself," K'hetah explained just at the very moment the bronze lost interest in the young dragon and continued on his way into the lake. "I hope he doesn't swamp her," he added, wincing as a large wave did roll in the direction of the young gold.

Instead of moving away, Elleth turned to face the wave and let it wash over her. She let out a snort which sounded rather suspiciously like a laugh. Meledei giggled. "Actually, she wants him to do that again."

"I'm sure he can oblige," K'hetah said and another wave was on its way even before he finished speaking. "Though let's not d-r-o-w-n the little creature because my name would be mud."

"I think your name would be worse than that." Meledei admitted, but laughed as she watched her lifemate thoroughly enjoy the soaking she received. "But she keeps telling him to keep doing it, so really it would be her fault, not his."

"Oh, yes, let's tell the Weyrleader and Weyrwoman that, shall we? I don't think it'll go very far toward excusing me." He smiled, for the little gold did seem to be handling the tiny waves perfectly well.

"She loves the water." That was a good thing considering that Dolphin Cove _was_ a seaside Weyr. "And she loves having someone to play with her. Your lifemate seems to be enjoying himself as well."

"Don't start me on him and water. He's gone crazy for the sea - the lake - anything. It's so warm compared to what he's used to he would probably spend all day paddling about in the stuff if he could." The bronzerider sighed. "That's something they don't tell Candidates ... Their dragons will have quirks and habits of his own and they can be quite incompatible with their rider's ones."

"Actually, I already knew that." Meledei admitted with soft laughter. "My father's dragon has his own quirks. I've been around dragons all my life, as you well know. Still, I'll mention that to my fellow weyrlings. Perhaps they will find it useful when trying to understand why their dragons do some of the things they do."

"Somebody should have mentioned it to me - as a Wingleader. Who knew Loeth would take such a liking to water when we moved down here?"

"It's really impossible to predict what they'll do." Again, she had seen that first hand, with her father's dragon and with those of her friends who had impressed. Even more so with the weyrlings since they changed so much as they grew. Meledei wondered how Elleth would change. "Still, can't help but love them."

"Lucky for them," he grumbled, though his expression as he looked at the bronze was affectionate. "Since he's now settled in there I might leave you to it, Meledei. He'll be there for a while and doesn't need scrubbing."

"You're going to leave me with both of them?" Meledei's eyes widened in mock horror, though her lips twitched in an effort not to smile. "I don't know if I can handle _two_ dragons, especially with one of them being that big lug."

"He's supposed to be big enough to look after himself," K'hetah said. "Enjoy your bath, little Elleth."

"Supposed to be is the key word." Meledei grinned, then gave the bronzerider a little wave. "See you later, K'hetah!"
