N'vanik

N'vanik

The harper greenrider knocked on the open door of the office of the Weyrleader of Dolphin Cove Weyr. The place was his first choice of coastal Weyrs, and not only because the man now leading it was only months ago a Dragonsfall rider.

The place also had no Weyrharper appointed, though that was something of a technicality with an entire Harper hall quartered within its cliffs.

N'vanik looked up from his hidework. "R'haran?" He knew the greenrider, though not personally. "What are you doing here?"

"Come to ask a favour, actually. And offer my belated congratulations for Loseth's win."

"Thanks." He smiled a little. "What's the favor?"

Although you have an entire Harper Hall here, you don't have a designated Weyrharper," R'haran said, getting straight to the point. The man was probably busier than he'd ever been in his life and waffling around the issue wouldn't help either of them. "I'd like to take over the job, if you'll accept me and Evie. Evielenth's capable of limited flight but not of working to any great extent, and I'm the sum of my experience rather than a master harper. And there are five children that would come with me." He shrugged. That's all there was. He could probably sell the situation better but that would defeat the purpose. If the new Weyrleader didn't want him, then he didn't.

"We need able riders more, but ... we need a Weyrharper too. And I haven't had anyone else ask about the job," N'vanik said. "Why do you want to transfer, though?"

"It's not for Evie or I," the harper greenrider admitted. "It's the children. My nephew's grandchildren. They're mine now. They come from a SeaHold and - well, they regard the coast as their home. They've been good about being stuck at Dragonsfall but I'd like them to be able to grow up in an environment they're familiar with."

N'vanik's eyebrow went up. "So you're just using me for my beach?"

"Pretty much. You either need a Weyrharper or you don't. And I need a coastal Weyr."

So much for joking. "Yeah, I need a Weyrharper."

"So, you'll have me - and the children?"

"Yeah, bring the whole brood."

"I will." R'haran smiled. "Thank you, sir."

"When are you looking to transfer?" N'vanik asked.

R'haran hesitated. "As soon as I can find a suitable foster-mother for the children, if you don't mind. And unless that search is easier than I expect that will give me time to hand-over to whomever takes my place at Dragonsfall."

"Shouldn't be a problem. I just wanted an idea of the timing." N'vanik leaned back in his chair. "Let me know when you find someone."

"I will. Thanks again for your help." He couldn't help but smile. This was going to be a new start for him and his children; not their home, and not his. A new place for all of them.
