Karri knocked on Teseada's door hoping she'd be available to talk. She
needed to talk to _someone_, and Teseada wouldn't care if she had tear
streaked blotchy cheeks. She'd understand.
"Come in!"
"Shards, Teseada, I don't know what to do." Karri exclaimed after she
entered and turned back towards her friend. She tried to wipe the tears off her face, then opted to just run her hands through her hair a few times.
"What happened?" Teseada pulled open a draw and tossed a handkerchief over
in Karri's direction.
Karri wiped her eyes with the cloth and then started twisting it in her
hands as she walked with Teseada over to her couch. She sat down and looked down at it as she spoke. "It's L'rew. I just went to his weyr to check on him. I was worried."
"And?" Teseada sat next to her friend, wondering what could have happened.
She took a deep breath, making herself stay calm. "He hasn't had alot, if
any, experience, and I offered to help him find someone to be with him. I
guess he thought I was calling him scared or something, and we started
fighting. He's so easy to fight with, I swear. Anyways, at some point
during the fight he said _we_ should do it." How they'd gotten to that
point, Karri wasn't sure anymore, it happened so fast and was so unexpected.
Teseada replayed that last bit back in her head. "So he needs a bit of
experience before a flight, and he said maybe you should help him? Right?"
Karri nodded, "No one's ever asked me before. With my scar, nobody has ever really thought me pretty enough. I thought at first that he was being mean, but he said it wasn't a joke, he was serious. So I said okay, I was afraid that if I said no that he wouldn't ask anyone, and as much as he really _really_ gets on my nerves sometimes I don't want him to have a bad first flight. But when I kissed him, he... he broke it off. He said he had to go and wash his dragon! Oh Teseada, I've never been so embarrassed in my entire life!" She started crying again and buried her face in the handkerchief, she was acting so stupid, but she couldn't seem to get control.
"Did you, you know, want to?" asked Teseada gently watching to see Karri's
reaction. Men were totally unpredictable. "Maybe he got scared?"
"Want to?" Karri repeated with a sniff, "I kissed him didn't I? And he's
the one that asked me, if he was scared then he wouldn't have asked right?"
"I don't know, maybe he was trying to get you angry and you didn't react how he thought."
Karri sniffed again, trying to stop her eyes from running like a waterfall,
"Well Shards! I don't know what he was _trying_ to do! I just feel so...
so... I don't know!"
"Let down?" suggested Teseada, that was men all over, she thought, lead you
on, get you going then wham, drop you back down in the weyrbowl with a huge
bump.
Her shoulders sagged, 'let down' seemed to sum it all up. "I thought we
were friends. I wasn't... prepared I guess, for his rejection."
"Maybe he was just surprised."
"It doesn't make it hurt any less." She always tried to put up a good
front, to look happy and inviting, it make it easier for the weyrlings to
trust her, to want to talk to her. But underneath it all was still that
doubt. The dread that her parents had been right about her and that
no one would ever want her because of the horrid scar on her face. "I don't know if I can go back. He asked if we could do it tomorrow, and I agreed at the time, but I just wanted to get out of his weyr, I hadn't really thought it through."
"You have to go and talk to him at least, if only for you. If you don't
you'll never know what's going on in his head."
Karri shook her head uncertainly, "I don't know..."
"Karri, just do it. Talk to him I mean. Even if he finds someone else to
help him out, if you don't talk to him you won't be able to face him again," advised Teseada.
She didn't know if she ever _did_ want to face him again. Right now the
option of just avoiding him for the rest of the Pass seemed a pretty good
one. Slowly though, she realized that Teseada was right. If he was scared, her running away wouldn't help him. If he was just being an arse, well, she needed to know that too. "Okay. I'll go and see him tomorrow like I said I would. I guess we'll see what happens from there."
"It'll be fine, and I'll be here after, if you need to talk."
Karri nodded, glad once again that she had a friend as good as Teseada.
"Thanks."
"You'd so do the same for me."
She gave a small giggle, "And I have!" She reminded her, hoping that her
situation wouldn't mirror the goldriders. After a moment she added, "Can I
admit something before I find out he's a giant wherry's arse?"
"Go on," Teseada grinned. "You can tell me anything."
She felt kind of guilty about it, she was mad at him, and hurt, but at the
same time she couldn't help the tickle in her stomach when she remembered... "He smelled _really_ good."
"Maybe you'll get to see if he smells just as good all over!"
Karri choked back a laugh. "Maybe. Then again, I can still smell him
_after_ I kick him between the legs if I find out it's all a big joke."
"Well if you are going to go for that part of his anatomy, make sure you
mean it."
